Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat.

The most likely reason is that the name is mis-transcribed in the 1871, so doesn't come up in a search.

As others have said, if you post the details here, I'm sure you'll get plenty of help.

Mike.

Hi everyone,
The 1861 census refers to John Burton and family living at Monkwearmouth Shore, Sunderland and in 1881 although some have moved on but nothing in the 1871 census. Please help.

                                         Kind regards,
                                                Peter Burton (pebur5)

Hi Peter

Do you have access to the census?

They are here:

RG10/ Piece 5024/ Folio 35/ Page 65

(If you can post the details of the census & references that saves time.  If you want the details of this one, give a shout!)

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

A good example of the kind of poor transcription to look out for . . . John Baston !

Poor transcription by who? I assume you mean The A Word!

It's correctly transcribed by Find My Past and by Origins.

Yes, indeed, "the A-word". . . a constant source of frustration and annoyance, yet possibly the most comprehensive single source of information available to us  :-\

. . . and the challenge of trying to imagine all the possible enigmatic permutations must be rather like working at Bletchley Park in the 1940's . . . excellent for the little grey cells  ;D
