No Place Like Home - Soundwell, Bristol?
« on: Tuesday 06 May 08 22:59 BST (UK) »
Has anyone ever heard of "No Place Like Home" in Soundwell?

It is the birth place given on my Hubby's - Grandfathers birth certificate from 1904.  Joseph Edward John Scott, March 31, 1904.  Son of William Scott and Emily m.s. Palmer.

could it have been a nursing home?

Might be an idea to go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and search for Soundwell.   The maps there are about 100 years old and one can pan around without cost although the resolution is not as good as it was when the site first opened.

I had a look round (Lower Soundwell - I wonder if there's another nearby) but could see no nursing home although a bit to the west and north is the Bristol Union!  Perhaps, "No place like home" was a euphemism used to disguise the truth because, let's face it, they were no places like home!

Even if you find nothing, the maps are interesting.

Good hunting

P.S.

Freebmd ( http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl ) gives his birth place Reg. Dist. as Keynsham so is there something amiss?  Perhaps "your" Soundwell is near Keynsham and that's in Somerset.

Old maps again!

Cheers.

Hi Chas,

Thanks for the excellent tip about the map site.  I will check that out for sure.  You may be right about the Bristol Union!  The other possibilty is that their cottage was named "No Place Like Home"   stretching it... but you never know!

That area of Bristol was pretty messed up when it came to County lines.  The actual certificate is all over the map.  Sub District of Kingswoood, County Gloucester, Reg. District Keynsham ( yes, that's Somerset)  Actual place of birth - Mangotsfield, Village of Soundwell, Rural District of Warmley.

Yikes!!!

This is the home that my grandparents lived.Unfortunately its a sad story.1901 census shows the family
Thomas and Sarah Ann Clements and family.Sarah Ann dies 1902 and the family go to pot.He is arrested for child neglect. The 2 youngest children are put in Barbardos and one is put into Downend Homes. The two children eventually end up in Canada and went on to have a happier life.My gran was there eldest sister and married by then. I am on Ancestry.co.uk and all the details are there.
As this is an old post you may have forgotten the original post so not sure if this will reach you.
Lyn
I have a photo of the house and some newspaper cuttings of the stories

Hi Lyn!

You are right, I wouldn't have seen your reply on here.  I normally get an email notification of replies to threads I'm watching, but in this case, I didn't.  So your quick note on the other thread was a good idea.  Alternately, you can send a private message through rootschat, that would have found me as well.   :)

your story about No Place Like Home is so interesting!  Your people were there in 1901, so my ex's people were there a couple of years after... by 1904

Was it a single family residential dwelling?  Do you know what street it was it on in Soundwell, I would love to find it on a map.

I would love to see a photo of the house, and read the clippings.  What a sad beginning your Gran's siblings had, I'm so glad the family all turned out well.

thanks for getting in touch!  I look forward to hearing more
Deb :)

Not really messed up!

The town of Keynsham is indeed in Somerset, and always has been.

However, the Registration District of Keynsham covers parishes both in Gloucestershire (north of the river) and Somerset (south of the river)! ::)
