Newspaper Obits - DAVISON
« on: Tuesday 06 May 08 16:03 BST (UK) »
Hello
I have had some good fortune with data from the Northumberland & Durham FHS which has identified my ggggg-grandfather:
George Davison of Blaydon - died April 1816 Swalwell and his son
James Davison of Swalwell - died 23rd April 1851 at Swalwell and buried at Whickham.
Would anyone know if there was a local newspaper which would have contained an obituary or funeral report on my ancestors.
Both were well respected community members.
George signed the application for a dissenting church meeting place in Swalwell in 1799.
James was a member of Crowleys Crew and had a headstone erected by fellow freemasons in appreciation of his character.
Many thanks
John Davison

Hello,
I was wondering if you have any info on Jane Davison, who married Robert Meggison.  She was born May 17, 1755 in I believe Hebburn, near Morpeth, and died July 19, 1836 in Bishop Middleham, Durham, England. Her husband had predeceased her.  Her parents were William Davison and Mary Shotton if my information is correct. I don't have any further info on them. I live in Canada.  I would love to have more info on Jane, or on Robert Meggison, if you have it.
Thanks so much for any help.

Hebburn near Morpeth is nowadays known as Hebron to distinguish it from Hebburn on Tyne. Davison is a very common name but Meggison is more unusual. Sir Robert Meggison a Newcastle solicitor son of Lancelot Meggison and Jane Pearson b 1778 inherited the estates of his Grandfather Michael Pearson and adopted that surname.  I believe the first Meggison in Newcastle was Lancelot Meggison Sergeant of the Mace in Newcastle about 1670. Must be a connexion somewhere.

The Newspapers were Newcastle Courant, Newcastle Journal (Current today on line) Newcastle Advertiser and Tyne Mercury.

Thanks for the clarification on Hebron - I was confused.  I have never been able to find my Robert's parentage. He was born about 1730 according to his death in 1792 at the age of 62, in Sedgefield, Durham.  I don't know where he was born either. His first marriage was to Hannah someone before 1752 and then Jane Davison in 1773.
As regards Lancelot, Sergeant, was he born 1670?  This must be a different Lancelot than the one married to Jane Pearson.
Do you know the children of Lancelot Meggison, Sergeant in Newcastle?  How would one find out?  Age wise, my Robert is not likely his son, but maybe a grandson as my Robert is born 1730.  The other Robert is younger than my Robert.
This has been a puzzle for many years as to his parentage and I was actually looking at a possible Thomas Meggison and Alice Bell, although their Robert was baptised April 18, 1725 in Boldon.  There was a second possibility but can't find it at the moment.
I would so appreciate any help with regard to Robert.  It would help I am sure if we could find his first marriage to Hannah. Robert lived at Hardwick Mill with both Hannah and Jane. I have the baptisms of 6 children of Robert and Hannah starting in 1759, but suddenly there appeared a Hannah Meggison, born 1752 for whom I do not have the baptism but is supposed to be a child of theirs. Hannah Meggison married Ralph Bell in Nov 1773, whereas her father and Jane were married in June 1773 and had 8 children.
Thanks for any help you can give or suggest.

Hello Peggy

As Peter says Davison is very common in the North East - I'm afraid I have no known links to your Jane.

Peter
Thanks for the list of newspapers.

Cheers
John

For Peggy,
I probably laid a false trail. I  assumed that a move on marriage from Hebron to Sedgefeld indicated a well to do family. Earsdon Moor and Windmill were owned by Mr Thomas Davison in 1832, Earsdon being a township of Hebron Chapelry, but it maybe the connection was the mill since your Thomas was a miller at Sedgefield.
Apologies to John for using his topic.
