Just wanted to say thank you for posting this link and the information; 300 people living in twenty houses, it doesn't bare thinking about.

The article is so correct that people were very proud of their Irish roots, when I first started looking for my husbands great grandfather, the family and distant cousins were all adamant he was from Ireland, when in fact he was born in Bradford, West Yorks and it was his father that was born in Ireland.

 My great geat grandfather was born in Ireland and his son was born in Bradford and later moved to Sculcoates. Does this ring a bell?

Hi Claire,

Looking at your first thread (big welcome to Rootschat by the way), you have a different family.  Hubby's great grandfather was Daniel McDonald born 1863 in Bradford; his father was Peter McDonald, born c1821, somewhere in Ireland!

I have Daniel's certs and all his census details, Peter is another story, he was a traveller by all accounts, profession was a tailor.  I have him on the 1871 census and his death cert in 1875.  He and his wife and daughter are not on the 1861 (probably in a caravan somewhere!).  But thank you for your kind offer.

I've been trying to find a birth for Mary Ann Stewart in Hull circa 1830.
I have the date of her marriage to James Rae in Glasgow as 25/7/1849 from her daughter's birth cert, but not been able to find a record of her marriage.  Hence no parent's names.   From the 1871 census of Glasgow Mary Ann's Mother was living with the family and her name is Mary Stewart born Ireland abt 1807.    I therefore believe Mary Ann may have been born in Hull in transit from Ireland!!  Anyone able to check the birth for me or give me some suggestions as I have not been able to find a birth for her.

Cannot help with Mary Ann's birth

Have found an appropriately aged Mary Ann in 1841 as follows:

62 Bridgegate, Glasgow
James Stewart, 39, Shop Keeper, Ireland
Mrs Stewart, 39, Ireland
Elizabeth Stewart, 15, England
Mary Ann Stewart, 11, Dressmaker, England
James Stewart, 78, Ireland

What a shame it says Mrs for the mother!  Have you considered looking at the death entry for Mary Ann Rae, as this will give details of her parents.  (If she died in Scotland that is!)

Also with regards to the above census, it may be worthwhile to look at Elizabeth, i.e. whom she married and track her through the censuses to see if it gives her a birth place of Hull and of course if you found her marriage entry it would give parents details.

Have tried to find Mary Stewart born c1807 in Ireland on the 1851 census, but to no avail!

Thanks for your prompt reply.
Yes I too have the 1841 census and it is very frustrating that it only says Mrs Stewart.   It is a good idea to try and trace Elizabeth & I will look at that angle.  I have tried on Scotlands People to find both Mary Ann & James Rae's death but as yest have not come across them, but will carry on pursuing that angle. I thought I had a death for James in 1909 but alas it was the incorrect one.    I appreciate your help. Mel

Hi Mel,

I don't have any credits but did some some searching and kept refining the search, and have found a death registration for a Mary Rae in 1904, with a birth year of 1830 and using the name Stewart in the other names.

I did not narrow it down to the district but it is Lanarkshire.

P.S.  Went back to narrow the search down to District and the district is Govan which is where James and Mary Ann were on the 1901 census.
