THOW Family
« on: Monday 05 May 08 13:45 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for some help I'm trying to trace desendants of Thomas McBain Thow and Jessie Maggie MacCuish they lived in Dunfermline early 50's, unfortunately I don't know to much about them.  My grandfather is their eldest son Thomas McBain Thow who later married Agnes Dickson from Springburn Glasgow.  I'm trying to trace my grandfathers brothers and sisters side of the family as well as find out what may have become of my grandfather as my mum and him lost contact in the late 70's when his married broke down with my gran.

Any help would be great!

We have an Ann Thow in our tree born about 1798 Lochlee Angus, she was the daughter of John Thow and Jean Gordon.  I'm not too sure if we have a match or not

Maybe?  looks like something that needs more investigating .Does your Family Tree have any  of these names .   Bannerman , Forbes,  Tough , Gordon  , ?   They would all be related to her in some way . , I have her listed in an 1851 census as the  wife of John Forbes , both ages 52 at the time ,

Hi melsimba66

If they married in Lochlee Angus, there's more than a good chance she was from that county….the bride's home Parish was the traditional location for a marriage to be solemnised

You say " Ann Thow born 1801 , Aberdeen ? " and she and John are both age 52 in the Aberdeen Census of 1851.

Yet the only match for that is in 28 Charleston Road, Aboyne, Aberdeen.
Wife: Ann FORBES 52, Proprietors wife, b Glenesk Forfar

Is that her?

In looking for naming patterns in their children…...
Do you have a list of their children - in order of birth?
Do you know the names of John FORBES' parents?

Did she live past 1855 - in which case her death certificate would hopefully name her parents.

added:  The Ann FORBES of the 1851 above, was still living in 1861 at Toll-houses Charlestown, age 64, Toll-collector, born Glenesk, Forfar.

Cheers

Yes , that is her, I was given the census by another woman when I posted a question on a different site, I believe that was as far as she could go ,     I know  the children , Ann 22 in 1851, David 18 , and Mary 13, . There is also this cloud of mystery over a lodger named Peter Gordon , no age , later in my own discoveries I found a birth of an Ann Gordon belonging to Mary born 1853, but others who helped my along found a birth of fa James Gordon born 1853. Mary must have been awfully young to have a child  and I suspect it was that Peter fellow . I can not find any more on Johns parents and I have kept looking but with little luck.. if you can get further that would be wonderful                       Melanie

I have a Robert Thow born in 1861 in Montrose. He married Helen Laing (My great grandmother's niece) in Arbroath in June 1881. Helen was born in Ferryport on Craig in 1866.
Robert's occupation was given as engine driver. Robert died in 1933. This is all the information that I have. I hope it is of some interest.

Stefburgas:  I possibly am thinking this could be the same one I am searching for Ann Thow 1798, do you have any other information on her that I could link with any one on my tree ?
