William H Hill
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 23:51 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Thank you to all who have been assisting me with the queries that are arising from
Guilsborough Churchyard, Northamptonshire.

I have found another stone with a William H Hill died in Australia on June 1 1892 aged
52 years.

Any help in finding out when he left England and his relatives in Australia would be appreciated.  :)

This is what I have managed to find.....

In NSW there are the deaths of 10 x William HILL (no second initial) between 1890 and 1894. Only 1 is listed as William H. and he died in 1891, parents unknown, District given as MARINE
Ref =16346

There were 3 or 4 more entries but they were for William J or William C etc.

As dates are not given, only year, that makes it difficult with the others.

No deaths of a William Hill that is possible between 1890 and 1894 in Queensland.
Ditto for Western Australia.
Can’t see a likely one on the Tasmanian Colonial database......I don't have the actual index itself.

Next South Australia…….

In South Australia there are the deaths of the following William HILLS between 1890 and 1894…..

William HILL aged 57 of Gawler South died 18th Mar 1892Ref = PtG 201/235

William HILL aged 60 of Tarcowie died 16th Jul 1892 at Hd of Pekina
Ref = Fro S 203/412

William HILL aged 61 of Mile End died 1st June 1891 at West Park Lands
Ref = Ade 194/14

No relatives listed for any of them, so that doesn’t help……

And Northern Territory records I have no access to.....  :-\

Hi dee,
If he died at sea [is that what MARINE means in this context??]  you would think it might be mentioned on the stone.  It says died in Astralia on the stone.

The stone would be more in the nature of a memorial to him.

Sue, I imagine MARINE means died at sea.......but am not sure.

I really can't identify one to be the William H Hill that Sandy is looking for.  :-\

OKay I have found William backwards through the censuses and he was born in
Mereworth Kent so not I am afraid the one that Sue mentions (Thank you for your listing  :))

At the time of the 1881 Census he was a Coachman in Guilsborough and
previously in 1871 at  Mereworth as a Gentleman's Coachman.

His wife was named Ruth (From Dorset) who he married in the Mar Qtr of 1864.

The stone covered the inscription to Ruth so do not know when she died but she is
noted with William.
