Ardnacrusha - The Shannon Scheme

The village of Ardnacrusha, close to Limerick City, is where the Shannon Scheme, Ireland's largest river hydro-electric scheme, took place between 1925 and 1929. Work was created for approximately 5000 people. The plant includes fish ladders so that returning salmon etc. can climb the river safely past the power station. My grandfather Edward Wells was a turner/toolmaker in the toolroom at Ardnacrushha for many years until his retirement. He was given permission to take me as a young boy on a guided tour of the plant in the 1960s
