Remind Me - Please
« on: Monday 28 April 08 13:57 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have been "off the air" so to speak for some time due to some of those emotional rollercoasters in life that happen to us all and my brain is not quite in gear.  Anyway to "cut to the chase" what I want to know is the best way to gather information about my grandmother's family in County Cork, Ireland.  I realize that I would have to go to the Ireland site & then County Cork.  My problem is limited information!  All I know is that my grandmother's parents were William FORREST & Margaret RUSSELL married abt 1894 - I know nothing of William other than that he probably died between 1900 &1909 as Margaret & children came to Australia in 1909 and she married again some years later.  What I know of Margaret is that she had at least 2 sisters, Mary Ann & Bridget.  Would I have better succes if I follow the RUSSELL family rather than FORREST or go for both families???  Would be grateful if you would point me in the right direction.
Many thanks,
Alchemyst

I'd go for both families and search "sideways" (brothers/sisters) for whatever clues I could find!

Welcome back to Rootschat. Hope things are better now and you'll be able to get some information here.

Marriage certificate for William Forrest and Margaret Russell will give exact date and place of marriage and should list both father's and their occupations as well as the names of 2 witnesses and residences of bridge and goom at the time of the marriage.
1901 census will show whether or not William was still alive as well as names and ages of all the household. National Archives, Dublin is gradually putting 1911 and 1901 census online but they only started with 1911 Dublin in Dec.2007 and it'll probably be a good while for anything else to be added.
If Margaret died in Australia you should perhaps start with her death certificate to see if you can get her age, birthplace, parents' names, etc.
www.findmypast.com should list Margaret and children leaving UK.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for the info.   I looked at 2 marriage certificates today (on a different site) wrong families!!  I realize that they do give quite a bit of information.  What I did learn today is that they do not come from North/East Cork. The only place of birth that I have for the families is COUNTY CORK not what part - other than that I have now narrowed it down to the South/West.
I think I need to take 2 aspirin and have a lay down!!!
