Hi
Whether present refers to whether or not the baby was presenrt at the registration.

I do not know about the letters & number.

Hi Annette

Perhaps if you posted the whole cert it would give everyone more to work on.

Hi Sue and Boydi

Thanks for your replies. I've just added the whole cert plus the bit on the back of the certificate. I appreciate all your help.

TIA
Annette

The S?D 1943 seems to be written in a different hand.

Guessing wildly here, but could 1943 be the year of the person's death?  I have no idea why this would be written on the birth cert, unless this is a copy that has been in the family's possession for a long time.   ??? ???

I thought maybe it could be a 'B'D  ??? (pen starts at top rather than bottom like for cursive 's')
I don't know what it means, but maybe somebody applied for the extract of this person's birth in 1943?
It was also in the middle of WWII.  Could it have been needed for something else then?  What a Mystery!

Hi Annette,
Found this in the briefguides on the Qld BDM site and it has some examples which is typical of your birth certificate.  So it would appear that the person on your certificate died in Brisbane in 1943. Would this be correct?

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/downloads/BriefGuides/BG24BDM.pdf

From the site:
ANNOTATIONS AS SHOWN ON CERTIFICATES
Some entries have had annotations added by the Registrar-General. These occur mostly in the birth records and can give marriage or death date of the child. In some instances the date of death of a parent is given. The number of annotations varies depending on where the entries were lodged. Brisbane Births average about 38% with annotations, while country areas tend to vary widely. One sampling in Logan in 1886 showed 57% while Burke in 1884 had only 16% with added information.

« Reply #7 on: Thursday 01 May 08 05:13 BST (UK) »
Hello all

Thank you Mariac your reply fully answered the query. The link you gave was also very helpful.

I only received the birth cert on Monday and am still waiting for the death cert. for this particular person so it didn't occur to me that it was the year of death.

Thank you also Tristiw as your reply gave me a different aspect.

Kind Regards to all and Thank you once again
Annette :)

Hi,
While you are waiting for the person's death cert, you might like to look at a cemetery search in the Brisbane area.  As you have his surname .

You might be lucky and that would also confirm the meaning of the letters and number, if he does show in a burial for1943.
