McCARDLE/McARDELL
« on: Monday 17 January 05 05:48 GMT (UK) »
I am desperately searching for anyone who can help me with my McArdle line.

Patrick, Owen, Ann & Eliza were all born late 1820's to late 1830's in Armagh.

They all emigrated to australia (Tasmania).

They were Catholics.

There also may have been another brother, Henry.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how I may trace this family.

As a number of them used the christian name Winifred for their children I am grasping at straws and toy with the idea that their mother may have been a Winifred.

Look forward to any help no matter how small.

Thank you,  Irene

Hello Irene,

I'm working on the theory of going forward in time to come back. Your McArdles may have emigrated to Australia before Griffiths Valuation of Ireland (1848 - 64). Provided some relatives of their father remained in Ireland it may be possible to establish the townland in which they had lived and possibly the church that they attended although it is likely that the details of their birth may appear in the Established Church (Anglican/Church of Ireland) records. www.proni.gov.uk/records/church.htm

The Irish Ancestor Surname Search shows Counties Monaghan, Louth and Armagh occupying the top three places in which families by the McArdle lived during the time of the Valuation.  The Valuation in Armagh took place in 1864. The McArdle name then only appeared in two parishes in the County - Creggan and Derrynoose.

Hello Christopher,

Thank you for your reply to my message.

My Patrick McArdle was married in Tasmania in 1861 as was his sister Ann (who incidentally married my husband's gr gr grandfather following the death of his first wife).

I have never been able to find Patrick's arrival in Tasmania so have no actual date other than before 1861.  Although I can verify that he was not a convict.

This is such a hard one for me - would have been easier if he were a convict.

Cheers, Irene

Hi Irene and others

I live in Tasmania, my grandfather was Patrick McArdle born in 1853 in Oatlands Tasmania (Australia) son of Patrick McArdle born in Armagh.  My mother recalls a relative of her fathers by the name of Eliza, so I believe with a little more research this could well be the family Irene is trying to trace.

Also, my husband and I were in Armagh in 2005.  On a visit to a little pub we spoke to a few locals about my ancestor being Patrick McArdle from Armagh, low and behold sitting in the corner of the pub was a Patrick McArdle who was the image of my brother and grandfather.  On speaking to him he told me he had a relative who emigrated to WA in the mid 1800's.  He then gave me his brothers name and suggested I call him as he had more knowledge of the family history.

I have the contact details for this brother but did not get to contact him myself.  I hope this information is of help to those trying to trace family history
