house name

has anybody any clues as to how to find out what a house was named before it current name? A member has asked me to find a manor house in Pucknowle which i think i have, but as it does not display the name, and so far no ones home, I would like to find a way of conferming that the manor house I have found is the correct one.

How far back in time are you thinking about? Have you tried the census? You can sometimes work it out by browsing neighbouring addresses.

If you have a name, maybe a telephone directory search on Ancestry?

Can't think of any surefire methods, except maybe asking local people.

Local library might have a file with such information. Or perhaps a local museum or the post office could help.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

thanks for the information i need to go back about 100 years the Manor house is very isolated and i can never find anybody at home i did try in the village but its full of new family's from the city's who have no idea i keep trying the house thanks i may pop in the church as it was one of the villages manors there may be a clue in there thanks again.

You might find something at www.old-maps.co.uk

The site of the manor house is shown (1891 map) but I'm not sure if it still existed at that time.  Manor Farm was a different place.

Note that the place is spelt Puncknowle or you will not find it. :)

A bit of Googling and looking at a census or two leads me to the conclusion that the name was Greenleaze.

The 1871 census for Puncknowle shows two families at Green Leaze/Lease, both AgLabs

Simon WHEELER 49
and
John MOORE 36

I guess it was just a pair of cottages.  Check the 1881 census and you'll find them occupied by Symeon WHELLER (58) and Samuel MOORE (33).

No manor I'm afraid.

that is strange as the writen information on the wedding certificate said game kepper at greenleage manor? i check with Mr Cheney the researcher to see if your information sheds any more light thank you

and also you could contact the land registry - but you have to pay for this
