Please help me find Peter Rigby

Peter Rigby was born c 1814 in Liverpool ( according to daughter's birth certificate).  He emigrated to Victoria, Australia c. 1852 and married Jane MacAra (supposedly in New Zealand  according to both daughters birth certs).  There is no record in the Victorian  or NSW BMD's for his death. There is no Victorian, NSW or New Zealand record for his marriage. So I am at a bit of a loss here.
Any help greatly appreciated.

In the 1851 Liverpool census there's a Peter Rigby, unm, aged 37, late post office clerk born Yarmouth Norfolk, lodging with a family Fletcher at 167 Grove Road.

Paperspast has several real estate ads placed by a Peter Rigby in 1862/3 when he was residing at the Wakatu Hotel in Nelson, NZ. The hotel is still in business - I wonder if they have the old registers? http://www.harlequin.co.nz/nelson/accommodation/Operators/WakatuAcc.asp

I'll play around with that & see what else I can find. Peter was definitely in Australia by 1855 as all his children were born here.
