1861 & 1871 Preston please
« on: Sunday 16 January 05 21:46 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone be so kind as to see where Alice McVay (sometimes spelt McVey) was in 1861 & 1871. She was born 6th August 1853.

Any info gratefully received.

Thanks for taking the time to read this note.

Hi

I believe this could be a very bad mistransription on the 1871 census

Alice Mackoay 18 boarder living at 53 Great George Street, Preston
with the following people

Joseph Miller 22
Isabella Miler 21
Mary Ellen Miller 9 months old (just had a look at the image)

All born Preston

Was  it Alice who married Richard Sherrington in 1874?

Thanks for the reply.

Yes it was the Alice who was married to Richard Sherrington. Quite perceptive of you. Is that the only entry of a similar name?

Hi Groucho

Sorry it wasn't what you expected to see.  But she was the only one I could see that had same birth year and birth place.

Maybe someone else will have better luck, unless you have the marriage cert for her and I can maybe look for her father to see if her first naem is down wrong?

Groucho, would you be interested in the McVeigh family, who lived in the Thornton/Poulton le Fylde area in 1861/71? They had a daughter called Alice, though her age was given as six in 1861 and 16 in 1871. This Alice McVeigh was born in Newby Bridge near Leeds, father James.

I have just looked at the 1871 image for Alice and it says MACKVAY which I would take to be just a variant spelling.  I'm sure that she wouldn't have been responsible for filling in the form (besides she may have been illiterate) being as she was only a lodger so it would have been written just how it sounded.

Thanks to everyone for that flurry of activity.

Stevebooth - Thanks for that but this Alice was definitely born in preston

Casalguidi - I've had a few variants of McVay. Some earlier listings are McVey. The reason I'm after any info is that I believe her father died not long after she was born (can't trace when though - anyone out there? hint hint) So I was wondering if she was living with any relatives, sisters brothers etc. that I don't know about. It is also possible that her mother Jane McVay (McVey, McVeigh.....) may have married again at some point (Caton?)

Just trying to tie up loose ends really.

Thanks for everyones help up to now.

Hi Groucho

We have mothers name now to look for, for you.  Do you have father name and then we can have a good old root around.

Hi

I believe Alice McVey was living with Thomas Caton and Jane Caton (formerly McVey, nee Hodson) at 97 Friargate Preston. in 1861.  Alice's age is either 1 or 7.   By 1871 Thomas and Jane are living at 255 North Road, Preston but Alice is not recorded.

Hope it's of some use.
