I've checked Vessels for 1891 - he's not there  :(

He might have been in off shore waters and I don't think they were included.

I've not checked Scottish vessels yet  :-\

The 1901 census would explain why the death of James was registered in Berwick ..

Northumberland, Tweedmouth

James Fettis, h. mar, 40, Stone Mason, b. Wooler

Well, well, well! All this while I slept! How amazing- thank you all so very much for all this fantastic  information.

The lady I am helping has no idea - she wrote to a list yesterday saying she didn't know anything about George Hislop and his family, and in the space of 24 hours we have her whole family - certainly the Fittes line.

I will try to see what else I can find about George HISLOP - he ought to show up in 1851 if born 1846, but maybe his age is wrong in 1901. I have suggested to the researcher that she gets the marriage certificate now its available easily. Will post back as new clues come to hand.

Again, many thanks for all your help.

Cheers
Kiwi

Hi Kiwi :)

We have been looking at one particular family on the 1861 census which is very tempting:

61 Norfolk Street, Tynemouth
RG09/3841 Folio 19 Page 31

Sophia Hislop, 39, mariners wife, b. Middlesex
George, 10, scholar, b. North Shields
Alexander, 8, scholar, b. North Shields
Sophia Mary, 6, scholat, b. North Shields
John Buckhan, 2, (missing birthplace- probably North Shields)
Mary Ann Hislop, boarder, widow, 79, b. London

This ties in with George's birthplace on the 1901 but the age is 5 years out.

On the 1851 the family are in the same area:

2 Charlotte Street, Tynemouth
Ho107/2410 Folio 280 Page 1

(absent)  Head, seaman at sea
Sophia Hislop, wife, 29, b. London
Robert, 2, b. North Shields
George, 5 months, b. North Shields

There is a possible birth registration for this George:

June Q, 1851, Tynemouth, vol 25, page 522

and a possible marriage for his parents:

June q, 1848, Tynemouth, vol 25, page 508

George Hislop and Sophia Stupart are on the same page.

We've not found George on the 1871, 1881 or 1891 censuses so far.

Regards

This is an interesting one in 1871:

32 Copland Terrace, All Staints, Newcastle upon Tyne
RG10/5098 Folio 64 Page 29

George Hislop, 46, Pawnbroker, b. Scotland
Sophia, 50, pawnbrokers wife, b. London
Alexander, 18, engineer at works, b. North Shields
Sophia Mary, 16, scholar,  b. North Shields
John Buckan, 11, scholar,  b. North Shields
James Walton, 5, scholar,  b. North Shields

It's obviously the same family, so George (snr) must have returned from the sea  and settled down as a pawnbroker.

I'll try and find whereabouts in Scotland George was from.
