Peter BLAIR - Hunter BLAIR
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 23:24 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on Peter BLAIR (b. abt 1890 in Scotland) who married a HUNTER. I believe that Peter is the grandson of John BLAIR (1720 - 1799) and Margaret MCLUCKIE (1720 - 1798) of Kippen Strilingshire Scotland. John and Margaret were my gr-gr-gr-gr-grandparents. John and Margaret had several sons including Joseph Blair (b. 1761 in Kippen Strilingshire Scotland and died in Northumberland, England). A letter from Joseph's brother Peter Blair to another brother in Barnet Vermont, dated June 22, 1816 states "Your brother Joseph resides in Alnwick County Northumberland England. His wife died about eighteen months ago."

Joseph had 3 sons who were alive after 1809 - William, George, and Peter. I believe George and Peter went to Northumberland England with their father Joseph.

A search of the 1841 England census shows a Peter Blair (b. abt 1790 in Scotland) living in Morpeth, Northumberland, England. He is listed with 3 children (Mary - 15, Joseph - 14, and William - 10, all born in Northumberland). There is no mention of a wife. There is also a listing for a Hunter Blair, age 7, living with his grandmother, Mary Hunter, in Northumberland.

In the 1851 census Peter (age 62) and the 3 children are listed in Northumberland and Peter is now married to Ann Mole (age 38).  Hunter Blair is still living with with his grandmother.

In the 1861 census Ann Blair (Peter's wife) is listed as a widow and Hunter Blair and his wife and son Joseph are living with her. Hunter is listed as son.

I believe that the 3 children (Mary, Joseph, and William) and Hunter were the chidren of ??? Hunter and that she died in child birth with Hunter. That would explain his name and why he was living with his grandmother and not his father.

I found the following entries in the Family Search - International Genealogical Index - British Isles
Peter Blair married Ann Mole 31 March 1842  Morpeth, Northumberland, England
     Peter's father is named Joseph

In a letter that Joseph Blair wrote in 1809 to his brother Robert in Barnet Vermont he mentions that his son Peter is "learning the book binding".  In 1841 and 1851 censuses Peter's occupation is listed as Bookseller.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have a connection to or information on Joseph or Peter Blair. I would especially love to hear from a direct male Blair descendant of Peter Blair who might be interested in DNA testing.

Peter Blair married Ann Hunter in 28 June 1821 in Alnwick, Ann Blair nee Hunter was buried in Morpeth 3 Feb 1834 at age 37, residence was Morpeth, or could be the Ann Blair buried 10 Sept 1834 age 56.  I think it was probably the 37 year old.

There is a Peter Bair baptised 9 June 1788, Port of Menteith, Perth, Scotland son of Joseph Blair and Janet Nisbet.  Is this your Peter?

I do not see any of the Peter Blair/ Ann Hunter chrldren baptisms in Morpeth parish church--perhaps they were Presbyterian.

Hi Janis,

Thank you so much. The information on Ann Hunter makes perfect sense. Joseph Blair, who I strongly beleive is Peter's father, went to Alnwick sometime after 1810. Joseph's wife died there.

The 1821 marriage of Ann and Peter and the death of Ann in 1834 fits the 1841 census data perfectly. I can only assume that Ann died in childbirth which would explain both the name Hunter Blair and why Hunter was living with his grandmother, Mary Hunter.

I suspect, but can't be certain, that Peter's father Joseph is the same Joseph that was married to Janet Nesbet. As you said, there is a Peter Bair baptised 9 June 1788, Port of Menteith, Perth, Scotland son of Joseph Blair and Janet Nisbet. Joseph and Janet are shown in the OPRs as having:

     William     B: Dec 29, 1783     Glasgow, Lanark
     John         C: Aug 13, 1786     Gargunnock, Stirling
Peter        C: Jun 09, 1788      Port of Monteith, Perth
Christian   C: Aug 22, 1795     Saint Ninians, Stirling

All of these are names of Joseph's children that he mentions in a letter he wrote to his brother Robert in Barnet Vermont. The letter also states he has sons James, Geidon and George and daughters Mary and Margaret. He goes on to say that John, James, Geidon and Mary are dead.

Being Scottish, I would  guess they were Presbyterian.

Are you related to this line of Blairs? If so, we may be cousins.

Again, thank you so much for the information.

John,

Sorry, no relation.  Just SKS who would rather sit here in the office with stacks of parish records and answers people's inquiries if I can than do laundry and vacuum.

Hmm . . . I misread the subject line to start with and thought the thread was about Peter Hunter Blair, a well known historian!
