1901 census lookup please: Grasmere or Keswick
« on: Sunday 16 January 05 21:21 GMT (UK) »
Could some kind soul please look up John Crosthwaite BIRKETT in 1901 for me? Born 15 May 1882, at Church Bridge, Grasmere, he was at Kirkallans, Grasmere in the 1891 census, aged 8, with his parents Robinson BIRKETT and Charlotte BIRKETT born CROSTHWAITE; around 1903 he was visiting South Africa and gives his address as Church Bridge, Grasmere again (in a birthday book of a cousin of his), but may have been in Keswick for the census. He disappears totally after that -- a puzzle.

Thanks
Geoff

Geoff,

I have just found a marriage between a Isabella Pearson and
a John Hodgson, which to place 21st February 1850, at
Garrigill, Cumberland.......

I am wondering if Mary was a second wife... and the boys with the name Pearson are actually stepsons.....

Garrigill is  not very far from Keswick....

It is getting exciting.......

Be back after tea, kids have arrived

Jeannie

That would admittedly explain why I can't find a Mary PEARSON.  Also that would explain the age gap between John HODGSON and Mary Ann (amost 10 years younger). And I see there is a death of an Isabella HODGSON in the June quarter 1855 in the Cockermouth district in FreeBMD, which would fit (though with a corrupt reference). But I still don't see quite how the sons with Pearson in their names fit in: they are too young to be children of Isabella's, so I am slightly puzzled about the names...

Enjoy your tea
Geoff

I have a thread which might weave into my tree involving a Birkett from Crosthwaite. Is it any link to your family?

My link is through the Wilson family of High Lodore farm, to Thomas Wilson who married Mary Birkett in Crosthwaite on 31/07/1809. She was baptised in Crosthwaite 22/09/1765 - seemingly the daughter of John Birkett bapt. 13/09/1720 and maybe an Elizabeth Rig. John may be the child of William Birkett and Agnes Crosthwaite who were married in Crosthwaite 24/11/1719.

Does any of this ring any bells?

Thanks,

Stuart
