Ahoghill Church of Ireland in 1852
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 17:14 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me where this Church of Ireland church would have been (or still is!).  This is a family marriage:
James Ross, widower,   Tullaghagarley married Jane Smith, Teeshan on 11/12/1852.
by licence , marriage performed by Rev. W. Tyrrell
Ahoghill Church of Ireland,Ballymena.
This is my g.g.grandfather who I know lived in the Tullaghgarley just south of Ballymena.  I am trying to figure out which church's records I need to search for their children's baptisms.

There are two townlands in County Antrim called Tullagarley- would this be the townland name? (one in Connor Parish and one in Ahoghill Parish).

Church of Ireland website listing for Diocese of Connor:
www.ireland.anglican.org/index.php?do=information.dioceses&page=parishes&id=64
St. Colmanell, Ahoghill: not 100% certain but don't think that the church records have been microfilmed by PRONI.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello Aghadowey,  It was the Townland in Connor where my g.g.grandfather apparently lived.  I know this because he bought graves in Old Ballyclug graveyard and is in fact buried there.  He and Jane SmithIif it is the same Jane Smith) had a son after Civil registration came in and that son is buried there (age 16).  Jane Smith came from Teeshan, so I suppose they married in her church.  If it is St. Colmanell's church, I have already paid PRONI to search their records and also some of the Presbyterian churches in the area. My g.grandmother was born in 1858 and I can't find proof of her birth. I think my brick wall still stands, unless I can find her in another adjacent C of I church.

Tullygarley (Tullaghgarley) is a townland between Ballymena and Galgorm (it is adjacent to the Galgorm Castle Estate grounds) ... and Galgorm is, as they say, only a kick in the (ahem) off Ahoghill.
Teeshan is very near a townland called Tullygrawley .. would that mean anything?

Hello Blackadder,  I wish they had called the Tullygarleys something else! It is so difficult to sort them out.  My g.g.grandfather was James Ross of Tullygarley (don't know which - yet).  He married Jane Smith of Teeshan in 1852 in Ahoghill C of I.  I have had the C of I records searched but no children to that couple in the records.
In 1875 James Ross bought 4 graves in Old Ballyclug Graveyard.  We have the receipt!  Can't figure out who he bought the graves for.  I have a list of all the Ross's buried there and he is among them.
In 1864 he and Jane Smith had a son, also James, who died at the age of 16 and is buried in Ballyclug.  His birth was recorded in Galgorm.
However, my g.grandmother Elizabeth Ross was probably born in 1858.  She had a brother William Ross, born 1855 (he is buried in the family grave in Belfast), but so far I haven't found any record of their baptisms.  This is the missing link in my family tree.  I might have to pay a researcher to find them.  RosemaryJoan

Tullaghgarley, Connor had no Ross names in 1862 Griffiths.

Tullaghgarley, Ahoghill had two Ross entries - a Francis Ross and a James Ross.

Both lie on OS Map 37, which covers the borders of Ahoghill, Connor and Drummaul Parishes. I understand that the Tullagharleys are adjoining townlands (probably in effect one townland) but stradling two Parishes.

You've got me lost ...

Would I be heading past Galgorm when going to Ahoghill passing Lisnafillan and Gracehill ???
Is Teeshan not out the Ballymoney line ... near where the ring road joins the Ballymena - Ballymoney road?

Scotmum, on a more serious note.  I am pretty positive that the James Ross you mention is mine - but I still can't prove it until I find his children's baptisms.  This one of my brick walls.  Thanks for the input.  RosemaryJoan
