Hi - I wondered whether anyone could help me.
I am looking for info on Thomas Ellis (born Whittington Shropshire in 1818) I have been given an obit from the Wrexham advertiser 2nd Aug 'Death of an old Ruabonite' and 9th Aug 'Death of Mr Thomas Ellis Coatbridge' 1884 where he is said to have been living 'near Wrexham' in about 1840
I am also looking for James Leonard (born 1788 Wolverley Staffs)
Thomas Ellis married Sarah Leonard in 1840 in Ripponden Yorks) By the 1851 census both these families are in Glasgow in the Iron and Steel business - I have searched for them nationwide in the 1841 census with no success.
Names are James, Elizabeth,Thomas, Mary Anne, John, Sarah, Joseph, James, William, Bibey and Moses Leonard. and Thomas Ellis. They were associated with New British Iron Works and the Pontcysyllte Iron Works
If anyone is interested in these families I have lots of info on their lives in Scotland and Australia
Any info gratefully received

I am descendant of James Leonard born Wolverley Worcs 1789 and ancestor of the Leonards you mention
I have a sketchy history of the family in Coatbridge and their connection with the North British and Phoenix Ironworks.
Are you interested?   I am a beginner and am not sure how to contact you

Hi

where are you??? With the wonders of progress I am in Italy on holiday but live near(ish) London, England

Email me at (*)- we will be back home next week

I expect we have plenty of info to swap - some of the Leonard family are in Australia, some I guess are still in Scotland tho I haven't traced any of them. I would expect them to all be staunch Wesleyan Methodists - 2 of Thomas and Sarah Ellis's daughters married ministers

Hi - I can give you lots more info - portraits of Thomas and Sarah Ellis are in the Coatbridge museum for instance - last time I spoke to the gent who runs this museum he did say that they might put them on display - they need a bit of tlc and cleaning. The factory North British Iron Works became a racecourse and is now an Asda carpark (how the mighty have fallen..) but there is still an Ellis Street and a Whittington Street nearby. Interesting that when I did find Thomas Ellis x Sarah Leonard mar cert (28 Dec 1840 Ripponden Yorks) she signs with a mark so is illiterate. I have Comfort Jones baptism 23 Sep 1764 Kingswinford. I also have wills for some of the family & 2 for the Leonards that were born in Australia. According to an obit for Thomas Ellis he was orphaned at a young age
Re 'getting things in order' I started off using the free software Legacy and then bought the paid for version.
I am still in Italy - perhaps a 3rd email to this site will allow you to contact me? Or maybe I am allowed to contact you??? Let's see!!

Thank you for your advice.   I have the family tree on Family Tree Maker but a small box of handwritten notes, not all of them entered in Tree Maker.   I am computer illiterate.   My eldest son who was the driving force is on holiday in France.
We Have a direct line from James Leonard to the present with some collateralls.   We ran out of puff when we could find no forebears for James Leonard, found that the ironworks had been demolished as has the Methodist Church which the Leonards built in Coatbridge.   Only the church hall remains - now the bowling club.   The site of the church  held a bungalow occupied by a Miss Leonard who chose not to reply to any letters.   The site of Leonards Land in Coatbridge no longer exists.   We made no real attempt to follow up the Ellis line.
Information about the iron works can be found in Glasgow University's Scottish Industrial History volume 5 if you can access it.
Regards
Tom 188

Hi,  I have read the thread here and hopefully you can all pick my email up.  I have just been given as a present a Robert Burns old second hand book.  It has a incscription in the front sayin it was given as a present by a T Leonard Ellis in 1894 and it also states that he was one of the origianl subscribers to this book which is pretty rare I think.  He has an adress as Dudley House Coatbridge Scotland.  Now this book was in an old bookshop in Shropshire where according to your posts seems to fit and was curious to know if is one of your ancestors.

Wow!!!!! Thomas Leonard Ellis (1861-1897) is my great great uncle. In the 1891 census he is shown as living at Dudley House in Coatbridge. Please do reply to this email - policy is not to allow email addresses here (I think)
