Ward of Chancery
« on: Monday 21 April 08 16:33 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Does anbody know where to look for records of a child being made a Ward of Chancery?  Assuming there is some kind of index somewhere I doubt if much info can be gleaned from it anyway but it would be interesting to check.

  Many thanks

  Nimrod

Hi Nimrod

Chancery records for England and Wales will be at the National Archives.  I doubt if there is an index online

Hi Stan,

Thanks for the link.  Looks like quite a task but at least I know now where to look.

Have you read Bleak House - the Jarndyce children were wards of chancery.

I think such children are rarely traceable, though they may be illegitemate offspring of someone wealthy who didn't want them known about.

Hi Bob,

No I havn t read Bleak House but what you say about the childeren refers almost identically to my reason for posting this topic.

My GGG Grandmother was the illegitimate Daughter of one Lady Tempest, or so the family story goes.  We have a minaiture of this Lady which has been handed down through the generations. I ve no reason to doubt the story but by the same token it s probably impossible to prove a thing but thought it an avenue worth exploring for want of any other leads.

Hi Nimrod,

What have you found out about this Lady Tempest? Is there any background info and  does the timeframe and locations fit?

Hi Nimrod,
I believe there are some chancery records indexed on the British Origins site (early ones for reign of Charles I):
www.originsnetwork.com
You need to have a membership for the Society of Genealogists or pay on the origins site.
If you go to the homepage of the orgins site it will tell you what is available, before you pay.
Hope this helps - not sure what period you're looking at.
Sounds interesting!
Kind regards,
Paulene :)
P.S. The origins site gives you an example of what information the site will give on these chancery cases.
