Hi Donna, Just seen your message , its late so will get back to you in a day or so. I have a Janet but born 1796 married David wilson. I don't have a Janet further back in my direct tree but will let you have what I have got. Mine seemed to be Wylie back to early 1700's. Before that I have seen it both as WYLLIE  and WAYLIE!!

Hi Icini,

My g.g.g'parents are David McLaren & Margaret Dickie. Margaret born abt 1835, Mauchline, Ayr. They married 1854, Glasgow.
Shipping records have them travelling from Glasgow to Australia 13/11/1865 aboard the 'Samarang' with 3 sons, Thomas 11, George 9, (my g.g'father) and Duncan 5. The family spent 1 year in Queensland before moving to Victoria.

Any connection?

cheers,

Wendy

Hello; My Margaret Dickie was born 1770, parents Robert Dickie, and Jean Gemmil. It may be yours mother or something, but I have no dates as to marriage for her. Her sister Jean was mother to my 3rd great grandfather, Sidney Millar.  Donna

Hi Donna
This is probably a coincdence, I thought the surname GEMMILL was familiar,  I have Janet DICKIE parents John DICKIE and Ann CAMPBELL. Ann's parents John CAMPBELL  and Margaret SMITH, Margaret's parents were Archibald SMITH and Margaret COCHRAN. (BORN 1711) Her parents were James COCHRAN and Margaret GEMMILL
To add some to the WYLIE (WYLLIE) post I have ....
Robert WYLLIE (WAYLIE) b 1683 married in 1702 to Susannah REID born 1687.
Son Robert b 1709 Montcurr, Kilwinning. Married Ann YOUNG ( born 1714/15  Stevenston) in 1733 Kilwinning.
Children Susan 1734
Robert 1736
Margaret 1738
Ann 1741
Jean 1744
 and finally Alexander 1747.
I am decended from Robert 1736 but no Janets there I'm afaid.
Best wishes
Sarah

Thanks Sarah:  (I always double check your name before posting, just to be sure). One thing I find funny is that those towns were quite small- way back when ,,and yet it's hard to find a relationship.  At one time Irvine only had a few hundred people, and loads of them with the same name. Yet try as I might , sometime I feel I must hallucinating that they lived there at all.  Of course sometimes I find a really strong connection, as I have with the Jaffrey line, and my Dickson line in Lanark, but most of the time it's dig dig dig.   Best wishes..Donna

Hi Donna
Regarding the Ralston connection.  I am descended from a James Ralston born in Tarbolton, Ayr m. Janet Murdoch, also born in Tarbolton, Ayr.
They had at least 3 children that I have found so far - Marion, Jessie and John all born about 1837 - 1847.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Regards Lisa

I have two James Ralstons. James  1834- 1907, son of Alexander Ralston and Janet Wyllie. He married Janet Boyd and had the following children: Agnes  ( 1861),
Alex ( 1863), James ( 1869), Sarah ( 1876).  They were from Killwinning.  Don't know if this will help you.   Donna
