Brewer Family,Portsea Hampshire
« on: Sunday 20 April 08 21:33 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information regarding the Brewer family,Portsea Hampshire.

James Brewer b 1804 Fareham,Hampshire
married 30th may 1832
Jane Hall b 1812 Portsea,Hampshire

Children
Richard James b 1833
Mary abt 1834
James b 1837
George b 1842
Louisa Eleanor b 1843
Emma b 1847

I believe Mary Brewer married Unknown Matthew and had son William Matthew in 1860,William died in infancy.
she then married John Ingram ( marriage possibly took place in Portsea ) and went on to have son George John Ingram in Hartlepool in 1865,the family eventually settled in Whitby,Yorkshire.
I would be very grateful for any information at all about any member of the family.

Here's hoping :)

Hello anniee63,

Are you a little out with the ages of the children?

Fisrtly the only birth reg I can find for Louisa Eleanor Brewer is
FreeBMD
Mar qtr 1841 Portsea island  7 54

then in 1841 she appears with (what seems to be ) your familyage 4mths

1841
Sandwich t Portsea
jane brewer 30 seaman's wife
mary 6
james 4
Louisa 4mth
all b in county
HO107 415 91 23

however she is not with family in 1851
5 Widgen Court
Portsea
Jane brewer head M 38 Seaman's wife
Jane daughter 16 at home
Emma daughter 4
George son 1
all b portsmouth
(is it possible jane age 16 is mary -and her name in fact was mary jane?)
HO107 1658 245 46

if mary was really mary jane -then this is a possible marriage for her
Sept qtr 1852
Alverstoke
2b 691
on same page
Mary jane brewer
george matthew

1861
North St
Portsea
james Brewer head M 57 Seaman fareham Hants
Jane wife 49 Portsea
Mary matthew daughter M 27 Charwoman Portsea
William Matthew G son 1 portsea
Emma brewer daughter 14 scholar Portsea
george brewer son 12 Portsea
RG9 637 67 38

maybe george brewer (who you have b 1842 died and they then had another george b c. 1849/50

I will wait to hear if I am chasing the correct family before I post further information.

Hi Suz

That's amazing !
I may be out with the dates, and there is a strong possibility that Mary was Mary Jane.

I had no luck with her first marriage at all, just couldn't find any record of it.

Then there is a possible third marriage in Whitby,Yorkshire to George Suggitt.

Thanks

By the way - the Richard james you have c 1833 I cannot find -there is a Richard of correct age and p.o.b. -but his father is Richard too

There is a possibility that george could be george Edwin

Birth reg
George Edwin brewer
Dec qtr 1849
Portsea Island 7 179

I could not find another george b correct time and place - and who (possibly) is your george - on some census he gives the initial E

I think Richard James may have died 1834 - there is a burial for a Richard Brewer, infant, in Portsea.

None of the children between Richard James and Louisa seems to hav been baptised - either that or my eyes need yet another test  :-\
