Davison or Davidson of Bayfield Ontario, 1880
« on: Saturday 19 April 08 19:32 BST (UK) »
Hello ... wonder if anyone can help me?
I have a Margaret Davison (could be Davidson) b. July 25, 1880, Bayfield (?), Ontario ... daughter of James Davison and Nancy Greer.
She married Samuel Deacon when she was 21, June 20, 1901. This marriage was witnessed by Sydney Naylor and Lizzie Naylor according to a snippet from the internet.
She had 7 children and died (possibly in childbirth) 1916.
Her oldest daughter, Esther, was 13 when her mother doed and raised 3 younger boys while 3 younger girls were sent to be raised by a childless aunt ... Elizabeth Young, sister of Samuel Deacon.
Margaret is my gr.gr.grandmother on my maternal side and because she died so young (36 yrs.... and her husband not long after) there is not a lot of info passed down through the family except 'word of mouth' ... Margaret is said to have been of Native Canadian descent ... how does one go about proving or disproving this ?
Margaret and Sam's oldest daughter died in 1961. One grandaughter is still living but she only knows what was verbally passed down.
I have no access to the Canadian census yet, but hope to get to the local museum in Wingham, ON, later this summer. Just thought maybe someone here at RootsChat had some info.
Thanks in advance,
Sharron

According to her death cert on Ancestry, she had eclampsia for three weeks and then heart failure.

Do you have any of the documents relating to the family, death cert, marriage certs etc.,

Have found James Davison and Nancy Greers marriage. On it it says James parents are James Davison and Jane Rowat and Nancys parents are John Greer and Laura Fields.

If you send me an email address by private message, I will send you what I found if you are interested.

The 1901 and 1911 Canadian Census records are available online at www.automatedgenealogy.com.

Looks like Samuel and Margaret in the 1911 Census here:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=94204

Could this be Margaret in 1901, working as a domestic:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=55728&highlight=7

Another domestic in the same household is a William J. Deacon.  Both census records list her racial origin as "Scotch" but you might want to search for her parents to see if their census records list anything that could point to native heritage.

And perhaps, Samuel in 1901 - the family is split over two pages, first link is for his father

Corson/Causon - Gloucestershire
Nicholas - Pembrokeshire
Clark - Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire

I am delighted with the information that you both have supplied ... you make it seem so easy. I now have birthdates, names and initials and a little better understanding of my family's lives.
I will continue my search for Margaret's ancestry ... I read that 'white indians' were often listed as servants/domestics on the census.
Thanks a million,
Sharron

Hi Sharron

I got your email and sent you quite a bit of stuff about a couple of days ago. Did you not receive anything, or maybe it got lost in cyberspace.
Let me know, if you didn't I will try and send it to you again.

I thought you might find this book interesting. Your family isn't mentioned, but it has lovely photos of Bayfield.

Hello Sue,
Sorry to say that I did not receive your email ... I'd be very grateful if you would try again.

Thank you Janice M ... I really appreciate this and will try to find out more about Bayfield, ON.

And Thank you J.J. ... I do have that info and plan to research Stanley, ON as well.

Turns out that my aunt, Margaret's grandaughter has a picture of Margaret somewhere and she is on a quest to dig that up ... can hardly wait for that !

You have all been very helpful,
Warm regards,
Sharron
