MY MUMS NAME WAS JESSIE AUSTIN TARLTON, HER DAD WAS WALTER GEORGE TARLTON AND HER GRANDFATHER WILLIAM DIGBY TARLTON,GREAT GRAND FATHER THOMAS WELDON TARLTON   born Ireland c  1796. Census show Thomas    Weldon was born either Killeigh,Kings County, Queens County or Offlay. depends what site i look on.Being English i am finding this totally confusing, can someone please explain the counties to me, please!!
Also, more annoying is the fact that i have found  several other Tarltons  with the middle name of Weldon and also a reference to a wedding  of  a John Tarleton and a Miss Weldon c1740 Killeigh - was this why the name of Weldon was first used as a Christian name.
Thomas Weldon c1796 married an Elizabeth Stevenson and  they had, amongst others, sons     called Thomas Weldon  c1830 and William DIGBY Tarlton   c1824. I have also found numerous Tarltons from Killeigh  with the middle names of WELDON or DIGBY ,surname Tarlton , would love to take my tree back further and include some of these people but where do i start, can anyone help me please.!!!??

Hi,

You are lucky having such a rare name to research. There were 6 Tarlton households in the Griffiths Valuation in Antrim, Dublin, Fermanagh and Galway and 23 Tarleton mainly around Offaly and Laois.

Laois used to be called the Queens County and Offlay the Kings County.

Write down exactly what you know from birth, marriage etc records first so you know what you know and what the source is. Then you can see what holes you are left with.

This is probably one of yours from the Griffiths Valuation in Co Kildare in 1851.

Many thanks for your reply, and the information regarding Kings and Queens County.

Looking at things logically i suppose i am trying to do the impossible.
I have a certain relative THOMAS WELDON TARLTON born c 1795 in Ireland ? who married Elizabeth Stephenson 18.5.1817 in London.
One of their children was named William DIGBY Tarlton 1824 (my g.g. grandfather)
there was also another Thomas WELDON Tarlton  born 1830.
On searching through IGI records i have found the following
Drought WELDON Tarleton c 1754 Offaly - parents John WELDON Tarleton and Miss Scott
Thomas WELDON Tarlton   c 1795 born LONDON
Robert Tarleton c1750 Fenter Offaly
parent John WELDON Tarleton and Miss Scott
George Tarleton c1748 same details as above
John William c 1746            "       "        "   "
John WELDON      c1740 Killeigh parent John Tarleton and Miss Weldon
also DIGBY Tarleton    c  1655 Killeigh  parents  John R

and it goes on and on!! Its the names of Digby and Weldon that are eating away at me. All i really want to do is establish that 'my' Thomas Weldon really was born in Ireland and any names of brothers, you say there are not many Tarlton families, i have managed to find hundreds, all turning up with Digbys and Weldons, i have sent for several certs just to see who parents are, the last one being a Thomas Digby 1838,  father turns out to be a Richard Weldon, but becaue of being prior 1837 i am coming to a halt .
Maybe i ought to stop where i am and start on the Smiths of my Dads side!!

OK here's the question. What religion do you think they were? The only way I can see to link them all is to look for the baptism records. Probably in Killeigh Offaly/Kings or (less likely) Kilberry Co Kildare.

I'm guessing that Thomas Weldon TARLTON b 1795 was the offspring of one of the sons of John Weldon and Miss Welden. These probably come from Digby.

Maybe the genealogical office has something if they are a well known, landed family. You can also search wills and the indexes at the national library and the national archives for the name.
