1930s Belfast actor
« on: Friday 18 April 08 16:48 BST (UK) »
I'm attempting to assist finding more information about a Belfast actor. Unfortunately all that is available is his christian name ... Jock and a few postcards sent home by him. I'm waiting a reply re the address on those postcards.

Jock's messages said that he was touring Canada and the USA and the season was coming to an end in June 1935. He was then going to Hollywood to make a picture and hoped to be home in Belfast in 1936.

See   1930s Belfast actor touring Canada on the Emigrants to Canada board.

Hi Chris,

You are treading the thin boards pretty deftly there.
[Watch that you don't break a leg!]

----

Perhaps your "Jock" was a John MILLAR ...

... who might then have inspired his younger relation,
William MILLAR (professional alias Stephen BOYD),

  born 04-JUL-1931 at Glengormley,
one of nine children of Martha Boyd and
Canadian truck driver James Alexander Millar

... to follow in his acting footsteps in California!

The details of SB's early life and career might provide some hints to guide your research on the earlier period:

----

A John WHITLEY used to be much in demand for his performances around the Belfast area in the 1940s & 1950s.
However, I think this was because of his singing skills.

So, unlikely to be the 1950s Hollywood actor John WHITELEY!

Wonder if they had any genealogical connection with ...

"Hobart Johnstone WHITLEY was the great developer of the Western United States where he planned and started 140 towns. His final crowning glory was the buying, planning, developing and naming the Southern California city of Hollywood. This started just before the new century 1900. His connection to Scotland was that he was direct heir to the Marques of Annandale."

Vague recollection ...

A [John?] SHERRARD ran a theatre in Belfast.

Hi Captain Jock,

John Millar ... now there's a thought. There was a Belfast character actor named John McBride who is another possibility. I don't know much about his movie career though.

Bambino,  The Rocky Road that I walked along many times ran off the 'Hill Foot Road'.  This was in the South of Belfast in the Parish of Knockbreda.  What years are you talking about?? RosemaryJoan
Cully, Bannister, McConnell, Wallace (Co. Armagh)  Anderson, Ross (Co. Antrim), Gray, Truesdale (Co. Down)
McCormick (Killyleagh and finally Belfast)

I'm certain there are many Rocky Roads. Offhand I know of Rocky Roads
at Dundonald (along the side of Knock Golf Club), Cregagh and Gilnahirk.
