Mellickstown, Ardee- COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 17 April 08 21:52 BST (UK) »
I have a baptism in 1822 of Patt Jordan of Mellickstown, Ardee. Can anyone give me any idea of where Mellickstown was in relation to a present day town?

Thanks,

Mountmellick, Ardea Parish is north of Port Laoise town.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Fairlane,

I believe you are referring to Millockstown, a townland a few miles south of the town of Ardee. The townland is in the Civil Parish of Kildemock, in the County of Louth (Index to Townlands 1851). I was able to find it on Google Maps. Patt Jourdon was baptised on 23 August 1822, parents: Christy Jourdon and Catty McDonald.

One of the best townland surveys available for any townland in Louth, is that of Millockstown, written by Father Dermot McIvor in the Journal of the Louth Archaeological and Historical Society for the years 1952, 1953 and 1956. It comes to about 60 pages and includes church records up to about 1860 and other earlier records, including maps.

Regards,

Brendan

aghodowey - thanks for your suggestion.

Brendan - many thanks -  Millockstown is fairly near to Philipstown (Mosstown) which is the area I'm interested in. The Google map is most useful and I've now bookmarked this for future use.

Patt Jordan married Catharine Flanaghan on 19 April 1837 at Dunleer and they had Mary b.1835; Joseph b.1837; John b.1838; Bridget b.1841 & Simon b.1844. I have all details. Catharine was buried 17 Jul 1847 Dunleer and Patt on 25 Jul 1852 at Dunleer but no ages given. There is mention of Admin. of Pat Jordan in the Griffiths Valuation. I've now come to the conclusion that Patt Jourdan bap 1822 is probably too young (there is a marriage of Patt Jordan to Mary Bellew at Lordship in 1847 which seems more likely) and none of the children of Patt & Catharine or Simon's children were given the name "Christy" or "Christopher".

I've found a Patt Jordan bap. 1790 in Drogheda (where my Simon lived with his family in the late 1800's) and a Simon bap. there in 1749 so I'll browse Louth Library online a bit more and then buy the details of a few more records.

Jordans owned a farm of land here at Millockstown, Ardee, Co. Louth.   The land is still refered to as "Jordans", but the family has been gone for quite some time.  I have an Uncle in his late 80's who would have know some of the family, but would need to know what exactly you would need, or if there is another family name.  Millockstown is quite a small townland, and only a few mins walk from me now.
