... One thing is for sure, all Caswells come from Wiltshire originally....

I'd love to believe you. I have seen your research and cannot fault it. However, I have failed to trace my Thomas back past his marriage to Margaret Pitcher on 18 Feb 1784 in Netherbury, Dorset. I would welcome any guidance.

I think we have two different people here. Give me more info on your family please.

Maybe they called your guy Thomas because that was his second name?

We have traced my line from a Thomas Caswell who married a Margaret Pitcher on 18 Feb 1784 in Netherbury, Dorset. We have no sign of his birth place or date. If he or his ancestors are ultimately from Wiltshire there seems to be no sign.

I would welcome any suggestions as to who he might be.

I think he's Henry Thomas Breadmore Caswell 7 jun 1883

Does that make sense?

Not if he was getting married 99 years before his birth. :)

Whoops!

I found this

http://www.ancestryhost.org/caswells/FamilyTree/family.php?famid=F145

and

11-Nov-1832; William CASWELL son of Thomas & Mary CASWELL Blacksmith, Holditch   Thorncombe Baptisms

12-Oct-1834; James Cook CASWELL son of Thomas & Mary CASWELL Blacksmith, Holditch
01-Jan-1837; Thomas CASWELL son of Thomas & Mary CASWELL Blacksmith, Holditch
12-May-1839; Richard CASWELL son of Thomas & Mary CASWELL Blacksmith, Holditch

These are blacksmiths = must come from the Wiltshire line

14 8 1753 John Caswell of Chardstock & Jone Butcher of Musbury  married

There seems to be a LOT more Pitchers and Caswells around Netherbury

13-Sep-1713; George HODDER & Katherine CASWELL of Thorncomb Married

Lets get a gedcom file going, I need to work these trees out. There seems to be two family groups right now, the 1740s and the 1820s.   Does anyone have a gedcom of the early line?

That's my tree on AncestryHost.

Not sure about any connection with Thorncombe or Holditch. The first four children were born in Powerstock. Then comes Clement, a mariner who ended up in Durham.

I'd be happy to provide a GedCom. PM me and I'll get one to you. Your interest is appreciated.

Hi Justin,

There are many good suggestions if you are just starting out on the beginners forum here:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,47.0.html

The first thing to do is make a note of all of the details you DO know like your parents names (especially middle names) and your mother's maiden name and as much as you know about your grandparents.

A good start can be made at freeBMD here to fill in some blanks and work out where to go forward:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Also, don't hesitate to post questions here on Rootschat. Everyone here are keen to help.

Good luck in your quest - but be warned, it is VERY addictive.  :)
