I've tried Dafydd but no luck.

The only other thing that I can think of, and it always has to be a possibility - it's happened in my lines - is that David was being 'economical with the truth' $:-\$

Another thought. Have you tried searching under David ELIAS? Sometimes Welsh names became anglicized on the journey to England

Yep, tried that one. As well as various other ways of spelling Ellis, and spelling david the Welsh way.

Got the birth cert today of the elusive David Ellis, its not him!! This one has his father down as william. Ho hum, back to the drawing board then!!

hurrah, found his death certificate. still as yet to find his birth certificate though.
