I know enough of my Grand Mother's family to keep me busy, except her Mothers Maiden Name. can you help  fill in that gap?  her Christian name was Louisa, married John Smith,  French Polisher, he was born abt1826 they had 11 Children between 1847-1868,  on the 1871 census John is down as Widower, but I have no date for Louisa's death. in hopefull thanks.A0510.

You could get one of the childrens birth certs to find out Louisas maiden name.

To emphasise what Sue said, Grandma's birth certificate is a 'must'. Second best would be a sibling's.

Hi, With a name like John Smith it does not make it an easy job.

What area are you looking for them. What is the ref. for the 1871 census that you have found for John?

Getting one of the birth certificates would definitely give Louisa's maiden name. From there you can go to the marriage cert and get another generation back.

If she had her last child in 1868 and was dead by 1871, that narrows it down a bit. There are a couple of possibilities on FreeBMD. Depends where the surviving family was in 1871. Nothing else around the right age in the area.

Dec qtr 1869 at St Giles aged 42
Mar qtr 1871 at Camberwell aged 42

What an idiot I am, fancy me not thinking of the obvious answere Grand Ma's Birth Certificate I often get carried away when 'working' then the old brain box shuts down for a while, "THANK YOU" to each of you who responded so quickly and put me back on track, I also realized I forgot to give area's which were Camberwell/ Southwark, Thanks again, Anne,A0510
