Egbert Archibald Atkinson
« on: Monday 14 April 08 00:35 BST (UK) »
I am looking for info on a long lost member of the family who left the UK to find his fortune in America. Sadly, his story faded into history. What I do know is that he was the son of George Henry Atkinson and Ellen McCarthy. He was born, I believe, in Pembroke Docks in about 1881 and may have died in 1947 in California. This is all anyone knows about Uncle Bert.
Can anyone help?
Scott

1910 Census in San Francisco, California, there's a Bert Atkinson, who is a brother of Arthur Atkinson, who is married to an Annie.  Does that look like it might be him?

1930 Census, San Francisco, California, 1909 Van Nest (?) Street
Egbert Atkinson, roomer, male, white, age 45, single, able to read and write, born England, parents born England, immigrated 1903, alien, occupation is hard to read, but looks like it starts with Art - maybe artist?  It says he has his own business.  He was not a veteran.

California Death Index
Egbert Archibald Atkinson
No Social Security number listed
Born 1 Mar 1881 in another country
Died 5 May 1947 in San Francisco
Mother's maiden name:  McCarthy
Father's surname:  Atkinson

He appears to have signed up for WWI in Canada:

At that time he was resident in San Francisco, but signed up in BC. Possibly because he was still a British citizen and not US? His occupation was draftsman, and he'd previously been in the R.H.A.

Thank you very much for that. That must be him. That document is very sobering.
There seems little chance then that he started a family if he hadn't by 1930.
Life may have been lonely for this ex-pat war vet draftsman cum artist.

You might want to see if there's an obituary that gives more information about his life and survivors.  I'm not sure if there's a way to do it if you're overseas, but here's some information from the San Francisco Public Library on getting obits through them:  http://sfpl.lib.ca.us/librarylocations/main/obits.htm

Hello there!
It's me again.
I am interested in the 1910 Census mention of Arthur Atkinson as Bert's brother. It claims he was a marine engineer which would be in keeping with his fathers occupation. I believe he was born in 1878 in either Hartlepool or Wales. Is there any further info on him?
Many thanks
Scott

Thanks for that Sandra. The whole point of pursuing this line was to see if we had any family in California. Uncle Bert appears to be a dead end. I assumed that the Bert living with his brother Arthur found by Shellyesq was someone else but it looks like we are barking up the same tree. Is there any news on Arthur and Annie in later years?
Just to be sure could someone kindly check the 1891 census to see if Arthur and Egbert were children of George Henry and Ellen Atkinson. The only entry I can find in the 1881 entry has George as a grocer in the north of England. I can only assume there was a lull in shipbuilding at that time!
Thanks
Scott
