I wish I more time to devote to RootsChat, instead of an hour or so of an evening.
Just to say that direct comms are established with Poll and Cazza. These two ladies are obviously indefacitable (better spellcheck that) and I've found some wartime colour to guide them.
Scrimnet - Do you have any details of Dad's HE-111 claim? We might be able to flesh it out.
Thudnut - I value your view as an ex-mob member. I am not, so do put me right if ever you catch me pontificating.
Pat - Thank you for posting the photo of Ginger and for sharing it with us all. There are folk today who would give their eye teeth for a flying jacket like that. As for what the detail tells us, all I can offer is that he appears not to be RAF Volunteer Reserve (a lapel VR badge ought to be visible at this angle) so that he was called up, rather than being a pre-war volunteer.

Can't really work on the details you quote. Type of aircraft perhaps, but I doubt if this would have been talked about to civilians, anyway.

  Re Ginger - Aunt Hazel has the christian names for Ginger as Anthony and Peter , in whichever order but we have tried these on the CWGC and not been able to come up with anyone specific. I was chasing an Anthony Peter Lovegrove at one time, but since joining RootsChat it was pointed out to me that he died as a POW and Ginger was definately KIA. The timings seemed to fit. Hazel was only about 8 years old when he was killed, and cannot be sure of the exact year, only that it would have been late 1942 at the earliest, but more likely early to mid 1943.
 
The only snippets Hazel is sure of is that he was an only child, from what she calls "a genteel family", she thinks he was from the South of England, and the 2 christian names she is convinced are right.

My mother was stationed at Waddington, but whether Ginger was there or at another Lincs airfield she doesn't know. She just remembers the pair of them turning up at my Grandma's in some type of sports car at very frequent intervals and spoiling her with little gifts and lots of attention.

 Even if we don't solve this mystery, I do thank you all for the interest and help that you are giving to me.

Poll I'd hoped you were counting them!! I think we will have to come up with a tally, then mutiply that by number of buttons, caps, etc etc so see how many  we've restored LOL LOL

I hope people aren't sitting by the pc waiting the imminent arrival of the restores, as there is so much work in them as you can appreciate and I know I speak for Poll as well when I say you are going to have to hang on a couple more days or even longer, and that's before we start to colour!!!

Seeing the other pics/messages on this thread, the thought occurred to me how nice it would be to have a thread where people could post photos of relatives that served during WWI and WWII, sort of a tribute to them.  Anyway, food for thought.

That is a great idea to create a new thread.  When it kicks off, please let me know and I will contribute what small amount I have recovered for three brothers, namely Richard, Roland, Alan and Neil SHEPHERD from WWII.

Richard, Australia Volunteer Defence Corps
Roland, Infantry with all his service in New Guinea
Alan & Neil, Artillery and all service spent stuck in Australia
Neil, RAAF for the last six months of the war in an attempt to get over seas.  Alas the war ended and he remained in Australia again.


YES Cazza I am glued to me puter waiting.  It is a bloomin fantastic pic, and like others Im sure, I am going blue holding me breath in anticipation

this one is taken at Langley when they were churning out planes. My Grandad is the chap in the middle on the ground in the white overall.  I also have another one which is more historic, a photo of the ceremony of the last one out of production at Langley for the war. I think grandad is the chap at the back with the dirty raincoat on
