This really is a stunning thread.  Well done everyone.  As an ex-RAF bloke myself, I can't thank everyone enough for the time you all spend on those who have served.

But mainly because my dad was in the Aussie army in artillery for the whole of the war and couldn't get a posting OS because he knew too much about the job.  So he was kept in Oz to train recruits in artillery, so his big deal in the army was to hopefully save others lives through good instruction.  He was so very peeved that he had himself paraded before the top officer in Australia for an OS posting only to be told that the more junior officers had it right.
Your father served his country Rob - and that's good enough for me!  There should be no tears - just pride.

Hello there Flakdodger,
We are all following this one with bated breath, aren't we?  I spent ages the other night enlarging faces on the photo just to see if Ginger was there, then spent another half hour on the Binbrook pages of the Lost Bombers site! That's as well as checking up on all of the new postings on this one, and wondering if the restorers are getting any sleep at all with all of those faces to work on.

Re your suggestion that I post my photo of Ginger -I've spent the last few weeks mastering the art of scanning at 600dpi then compacting the photo to below 500KB (all these technical things that they teach you on here!), but I don't know how to send a photo as a small one on this site. What do I need to do for it to arrive as a normal sized photo?
   Awaiting technical help!!
      Cheers, Pat.

My dad never left the country either...But he did his bit, got downgraded after double pneumonia and pleurisy, and put on a "Home Only" posting...COs driver, Bren gun carrier instructor, SHAEF officers mess barman, POW camp guard...

If he hadn't, I wouldn't be writing this...The Regt was quite badly mauled in engagements in Europe, Africa, and especially Burma

Oh... and he has a part claim in a Heinkel 111 that he helped shoot down with his Bren gun
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

You could either click on the "Attach a photo..."  This link pops up in blue under the dialog box when typing a message or use www.photobucket.com as I often do...

Hope this is going to work! I have tried to make the photo smaller in size - so here goes.

This is Ginger, KIA 1943? Pilot Officer (I think) Definately flew from a Lincolnshire base.

Not a lot to go on, I know, but if anyone comes across him on any other photos, please let me know.

 Thanks, Pat.

Ginger and my Mother were engaged when he was killed. My Aunt, who is 11 years younger than my Mother was, remembers him very clearly. He and Mum spent much of their off duty time at my Grandma's, and treated Hazel, my Aunt, like a little princess (so she says)
After he was killed, I gather my Mum found it very hard to talk about him - most of what I know came from my Aunt.
When my Mum died in 2003, this photo came to light amongst her personal things. She had obviously treasured it for all of those years.
I do wish that we had asked her more about him, but that is always the case, isn't it? he was about 22 when he was killed.
   Cheers, Pat.

HI Aussie

Your Dad may have trained my Dad, he was a gunner in the artillery.  He was on anti-aircraft guns in Darwin when the Japs attacked.   The fact I am here may be a credit to your Dad's good teaching  :) :)

As the interest in WW2 and the RAF involvement grows on this thread...I thought this would be a good link and may help the families of those who gave so much and to whom we all owe a great debt of gratitude :-*

Pat... I hope you find "Ginger" on there amongst the photos
