WILD family, Oldham, Lancs
« on: Monday 07 April 08 11:59 BST (UK) »
Researching origins of Abraham Wild, born Oldham about 1788-90 who emigrated to South Africa in 1820 with Stanley's party aboard the "John" from Liverpool.  He has his wife, Ann Thornton, and children Richard (18??), Betty (about 1811), Abraham (1813), Maria (1816) and Henry (1819) with him.  Trying to find out who his parents were and there are unfortunately several possibilities as there were a few Abrahams born around that time.  They seem to have been Methodists and were mostly baptised at the Shaw Chapel.

Any ideas?

Hello,
I know your post was a while ago, but did you manage to find which branch of the wild family Abraham came from. This is my family line as well. It seems as there were a lot of wilds in the Oldham area and they seemed to give their kids a lot of the same names. I have found a James wild, a Benjamin wild , Joshua wild etc all who had Abraham wilds around the same time.
My mother was Ann Wild a descendant from the 1820 settler wilds. Any help would be great.

Hi Vivienne,  Can you say who your mum's father was?  I will then be able to find the correct line.  If you like, I can invite you to see our tree on Zoompast - I will just need to have you email address.

Thanks for a speedy response. My maternal grand father was Abraham Thomas, he died in 1961ish. His father was Abraham James, his weather Abraham born 1812 and his father Abraham born 1790.
I can’t be sure of anything further as there seem so many Wilds in Oldham and a lot name their children the same names.
Thanks for any help.
Viv

Hi Viv,  I can confirm that we are descended from the same line, i.e. Abraham b. 1789/90 x Ann Thornton, Abraham b. 1812 x Annie Payne.  My line from there is from the youngest son, Henry William b. 1864 x Louisa Ann Rielly.  I have your line from there as Abraham James x Mary Anne Bouwer, Abraham Thomas x Eileen Grace Gardner, then their daughter Edna Ann Wild x Arthur Lewis. I have your email address and will send you an invite to the Zoompast tree.
As far as the Oldham family is concerned, I have never been able to pinpoint just exactly which Abraham he was.  There were4 or 5 possible births in the timeframe 1788-1790, but I believe there was a story circulating in the family about an old family bible where his parents were listed as James and Mally - so I have opted for this. Watch out for the invite - sign in and you will see a search box at the top lefthand corner of the page - just click on that and put in the name of the person you wish to view and it will "zoom" to that bit of the family.  I will make you the "root" of the family, so you will go straight into the part you want to see.  There are more than 9000 people on the database!

Just by the way Viv, my database says we are third cousins!
