Joseph Burkett occupation Sailor 1841-1871
« on: Saturday 05 April 08 20:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

My 3x Great grandfather Joseph Burkett born 1808 Lydd Kent was a Sailor according to the Census.  See below.

1841  Joseph Burkitt b c1811  Living Chapel Street  Parish of St Mary Dover   Sailor

1851 Joseph Burkett  B 1808 Lydd Living 17 Johns Place? Snargate Street, St Mary Dover  Sailor

1861 Joseph Burkitt  B 1808 Lydd Living 27 Military Road Hougham Dover  Sailor

1871 Joseph Burkett  B 1808 Lydd Living 8 York Street St Mary Dover Sailor

I have searched coastguard records online and searched for his name on the National Archives site and NMM website but i dont get any hits. I know that his son Frederick Joseph Burkett was a coastgaurd and that Fredericks son Harry also attended the Greenwich Hospital School so i assume that Joseph was in the Navy.

Would a Sailor mean that he was in the Royal or Merchant Navy?  Or could it also mean he was just a fisherman or another proffesion affiliated with the sea?  I would have thought that if he was a fisherman the census would say.

If it definately means he was in the Navy where would i search next?  I obviously dont know on which ships he served or where so i am a bit stuck.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Geoff

Hi Geoff

I think the various census say that he was a tailor ;)

Hi Geoff, yes, definitely looks like Tailor - have a look at other Ts and Ss on the pages and compare them.  Annoying, isn't it, the older styles of writing can look beautiful, but they're a b****r to read sometimes, aren't they!

Kind regards
Gaie

Hi Gasalguide & Gaie

Many thanks for the replies. Shows why I couldn't find a naval service record for him and also why he was on land at each of the census!! I did initially think he could have been a tailor but dismissed this as his son and grandson were both in the Navy (another case of 2 + 2 = 5!)

Kind Regards
Geoff

Hi Geoff,
I have just come across your post and think we have the same Joseph Burkett on our family trees.
My Joseph is son of Thomas Burkett and Elizabeth Blaskett, Lydd. He is one of ten children (two of which died as infants). My 4x great grandfather George Burkett is his brother.

In my notes it says Joseph was a Tailor. He managed his brother George's business at Dover after his fathers death. In his burial entry he is stated to be of Kensington where he probably lived in his old age with one of his prosperous sons.

His wife was only named as Harriet? and their children are Jospeh Frederick, Josiah Bradshaw, Lawrence Jospehus, William, Thomas, Frank, Harriet Amelia & Harriet Amelia (both died as infants).

I can see from my notes that Joseph Frederick was in the Royal Navy and was later the coastguard at Dover.

If this all looks familiar I would love to hear from you, as this branch of our tree is very incomplete.

Kind Regards
Jo
