Marriage Dixon/Davidson
« on: Saturday 05 April 08 18:29 BST (UK) »
I have hit a brick-wall with the marriage of my gt.gt.grandparents Theodore George Brittain and Margaret Davidson.  Theodore George, or "just" George was born in Wooler in 1839 and Margaret was born in Coldstream abt.1838 - the marriage probably took place between 1858-1859 as their first child Isabella Mary Dixon was born in Newcastle upon Tyne 8 July 1860 and was christened in St.Andrews Church.  I can find no record of a marriage between them, but on Isabella's birth cert. her mother is given as Margaret Brittain formerly Davidson. The family lived all their lives in Newcastle.
Can anyone help please?

It is possible that they we not married, I have one in mine that says that but I can find no trace of a legal marriage either.  :(

Hi Patricia  :)

Were her parents John and Helen?

There's a possible family in Coldstrream on the 1841 with a daughter Margaret aged 1. I'm trying to locate her on the pre-1961 censuses to see when she moved.

No marriage showing on SP but it might be an irregular marriage  :-\

Hi Gadget,
Thanks for your reply.  We don't know who her parents are, and we needed the marriage cert. to find out.  On the 1851 census there are Andrew and Isabella - he is a Mason, who I think are the more likely candidates.  George & Margaret's first daughter was named Isabella, the first son John (George's father) and the next son Andrew (who died 1 years old).   They then went on to have Mary Jane, Margaret, George and Annie.  So they could have followed a naming pattern.
My cousin is also researching the family and like me can find no trace of a marriage.  She did, however, find the graves of George's father and grandfather in the Dissenters part of Wooler Cemetery.  All of Georges family were christened in the NonConformist Presbyterian Church.

Sorry Gadget,
I meant the 1841 Census.  In 1851 there is no Margaret, but there is a Margaret of the right age as a Domestic Servant in Coldstream.

Hi Beckey,
Many thanks.  I will check this out, especially the death of son James at Newcastle.  It sounds as if it is the right family.

Hi Beckey,
I have found James Davidson in the 1901 Census.  He is a boarder in Newcastle with the family of Edward and Mary Charlton.  Mary is the daughter of George and Margaret Dixon, so I am sure it is the right family.
Many thanks for your help.

This is an old thread but I just came across it - think we're the same family tree.

Theodore George Dixon (known as George) was my grandfather (b. Dec 1876 to Theodore George Dixon (just George on the baby's birth certificate) and Margaret Davidson. Pine Street, Newcastle.
He had a sister, Annie, who was crippled, never married, died in 1957 at the age of 78. I think grandpa died around 1960 in Yorkshire.

My gt. grandfather Theodore George Dixon was born Oct 25, 1843, in Wooler - son of John and Mary Dixon (nee Thompson) John was a blacksmith.

I know my grandfather later lived on Dale St., mentioned in a previous thread - and a photo Patricia posted of a Dale St picnic looks like my great-grandfather TG Dixon

My mother (deceased) left a list of names: George, Annie (Renwick), Isobel (Ella), John James, Theodore, Millie, Freida, Connie, Charles

Hope this helps: would love to hear from other "twigs" on the tree.
