do any of your 'holloway's' spelt as hollowaye
i've discovered that mine changed the spelling by dropping the 'e' around 1609.

Hi , No Holloway as spelt,  ut i have now discovered  have gone the wrong way and the Wyle Dowdells holloways etc are not mine

I have a Mary Naomi Pearce who married a Frank Shergold in 1859. Mary's father was born in Steple Langford. Soes this connect with your research?

From personal experience I do urge you not to ignore variations in the spelling  of one's family name. If a name was to be added to a parish register by a priest, he wrote down what he heard. In any case many of his flock, being illiterate, were in no position to tell him how the name was spelt One s or 2 ss. I have seen both used for the same individual.  A strong West country accent could also render an F as a V. I have seen this too.
