St Olave, Southwark
« on: Wednesday 02 April 08 18:05 BST (UK) »
I wonder if some one might be able to help with a look up, I am looking for a Jeremiah Parkinson born abt 1793. There is a Jeremiah & Elizabeth Parkinson in the IGI having children at St Olave, Southwark around this time but no Jeremiah & wonder if someone might be able to look at the actual registers to see if he has been missed - have been stuck on him for some 8 years now!!

Thank you, Gaye

Hi Gaye, welcome to Rootschat!

Do you mean that you are looking for the baptism of the parent, Jeremiah Parkinson?

Or the baptism of Jeremiah the son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth? If so, was he the first-born?

Cheers,
China

Hi

Sorry, my first time & did not make it clear, it would help eh? I am looking for Jeremiah who I am hoping is the son of Jeremiah & Elizabeth. It is an uncommon name, there are quite a few in Lancashire but very rare in the London area. I just have this gut instinct that he could possibly be a son of this couple. From the IGI there are the following children:
Eliza Ann 1787
John 1789
Mary 1791
Sarah 1795
Ann 1810 - all baptised St Olave, Southwark

My Jeremiah according to his death cert age was born abt 1793.

My Jeremiah married a Fanny Bias in St Marylebone 1817, lived in Islington and then early 1820's moved to Brighton but the family later returned to Islington.

Hope this makes it a bit clearer.

Thanks Gaye

Okay...clearer :) I don't have the resources to look anything up, but what I had in mind was this: The firstborn of a couple was often born elsewhere, as the new mother-to-be often went home to her mother's house for the birth. She would need much help for the event, which would be provided by her mother, sisters etc. As she would also need much rest after the birth, the baby was often christened locally. So it's not unusual to find the first child christened in another parish if the mother came from another parish.

Have you found Elizabeth yet?

Cheers,
China

Hi China

Yes, have found Elizabeth, her maiden name is Franks and she came from Dorking, infact Jeremiah & her married there according to the IGI. However I have looked at the parish records (baptisms) for Dorking and there are no Parkinson entries at all apart from her burial in 1809 when she is described as Mrs Jeremiah Parkinson. Maybe my Jeremiah is nothing to do with this Jeremiah & Elizabeth anyway & perhaps I should concentrate on the Islington area where he & wife Fanny were having children. In 1818 he is a greengrocer, abode listed as Back Road, Islington which I believe is now the modern Liverpool Road. This is where their first 2 children where born, they then moved to Marylebone and then down to Brighton.
Maybe someone might be able to look at the Islington parish records for me?

Any other idea's would be welcomed.

Thanks Gaye

Sorry Gaye, that wasn't much help then, was it? :P

You might like to start a new thread, and ask again. The reason this might be a good idea is that when some members see a thread has been replied to, they don't bother looking at it...especially this one with several replies.

So start again, and hopefully someone will be able to help!

Hi! I’m a descendant of Jeremiah Parkinson and Elizabeth Franks, through their daughter Eliza Ann. I wonder if you have more information regarding them you could share with me.

Thanks,

Hi Claudia

According to her profile, Gaye hasn't been online here since 2008.

If she has changed her email address or switched off her notifications she won't know we have posted here.

Fingers crossed she comes back soon.

Anyone with info to share on Jeremiah PARKINSON may be interested in this thread

I believe, but have not yet conclusively proven, that the  Jeremiah born about 1756 and resid. St Olave when he married Elizabeth FRANKS in 1785 (Dorking Surrey), is the father of the Jeremiah in Cheltenham, not of the Jeremiah in Brighton married to Fanny BIAS.
Would love to find the 1756ish baptism of the Jeremiah, hop merchant buried Dorking Surrey (who was bankrupted 1808, and shown then as of St Saviours).
