Spittal Dean in Tynemouth
« on: Wednesday 02 April 08 16:10 BST (UK) »
In the 1851 census, George Nelless (a farmer)  and family lived at Tynemouth Mill, which was flanked on one side by the Master Marriners Asylumn Dwellings, Tynemouth Gate, and Percy Square (I know that's been replaced by The James Knott Flats) -
and on the other side by Spittal Dean Cottage, Spital Cottage, The Lodge, and Preston Lane Cottage.
In the 1861 Census, and those following, the family live at Spittal Dean Farm, where George farmed 72 acres & employed two farm workers
Would the Mill have been renamed, or a farmhouse built?
Are there any old maps or pictures of Tynemouth which might show this?
Thanks in anticipation
Liz

you could try the map at http://gis.durham.gov.uk/gis/

Choose North Shields and town, then you'll have to zoom out and choose the move icon to move the map over Tynemouth, at the bottom there is a drop down box where you can choose maps from 1856 to the presant and an aerial photo of 2001.

Hope this might help.

you can buy the Godfrey edition of old ordnance Survey maps for the area. you will probably need the Tynemouth one Sheet no.1   i have 2,6,7,8 .
I'm not sure where Spittal Dean is/was.
Google Alan Godfrey Maps for more details.

According to the Victoria County History, Tynemouth Mill was burnt down in 1805 and the Tyne Mariners Asylum was erected on the site in 1929. The Millfield extended from the Spittal Dean eastward to Tynemouth village. It may be that the farmhouse adjoined the mill, and only the name changed.

Hi Liz, not sure if you still need this info.

I live in Tynemouth and have a map of North Shields & Tynemouth dated 1856 on my wall.

It looks like Spittall Dean Farm was situated on what is now the edge of Northumberland park, right opposite where Spital cottage was.  (Now where Tynemouth Golf course entrance is)  Then you have Spital Bridge and Spital House.  The Street was then known as 'Cut Throat Lane'  Now Preston Avenue leading onto Livingstone Terrace/King Edward Road.  I am pretty sure Spital House was/is next to the Dolphin Pub.

Will see if I can get a smaller map and get it scanned for you.

Let me know if you want any other info.

Justina.

My Mother in law lived in the Asylum   Now Mariners Homes on Tynemouth Road.   Spital Dene runs through Northumberland Park.  So Iimagine The person who stated Spital Dene Farm was right about the golf course
