Hi,

Mary Pope, umn, 24, assistant, occupation milliner, b. cadbury

at 24 Dudley street, Wolverhampton - seems to be a Drapers Shop.
Proprietors seem to be the Tolefree ? family and there are other assistants too, no Popes though.

Thanks.

Dudley Street looks like a very busy thoroughfare. It must have appeared quite awesome to a girl who came from a small Devon village where everyone knew everyone else.

She married my Great Great Uncle John Thirlwall who became a photographer in Hereford. there is no mention of her being a milliner once she was wed.

Your welcome both of you

Dudley Street is still very busy but a lot wider now. They knocked down most of the shops on the right hand side in the 1950/60's to make way for the Mander Centre

I agree Fizzybubble it must have seemed a really busy place to Mary Pope when she moved here I wonder what she would make of it today

Hi Fizzybubble,
Just did a search on my mothers maiden name Tolefree (not a very common name it seems). Her family were originally from Wolverhampton and may well have been the proprieters of the Drapers shop...if so, hope they were nice to your young Mary!
