hi

Have just received the death cert for Thomas. He lived in Waggon St. Old Hill in 1901, a sawyer aged 63 and a widow, and on his death cert dated 3 March 1904 he was 66 and living at 43 Wagon St.  His occupation was a timber sawyer which also fits in with info I have.

The informant of his death was his widow Jemima. So he must have married again. On 1881 census he was a widow aged 43 but by the 1891 he was married but wife not down on census. In 1901 he was again a widow.

Have tried to find this marriage and also the death of Jemima, but no luck. If you have access to 1891 could you please try to find Jemima?

Have also put this on the Lydbury Nth topic on the Pughs.

thanks
Pat

Have just had a look on ancestry and found marriage of Thomas to Jemima Tonkins Sep qtr 1903, so she makes his 3rd wife and he died a couple of months later.

Update on this family:

I think Richard Pugh married Elizabeth Griffiths (daughter of Thomas & Mary) in 1807 at Mainstone, Shropshire. Richard Pugh was a butcher in Bishop's Castle in 1810, I believe. There may be a connection to a John Pugh, Carpenter of Bishop's Castle at the same time.

Their son, Thomas Pugh, married Hannah Padmore in 1832 at High Ercall

Their son, John Richard Pugh was born in 1840 in Bishop's Castle and married Elizabeth Yapp of Lydbury North in Lydham, 1870.

John Richard and Elizabeth moved to Birkenhead, where they had their eldest children before returning to Bichop's castle, having 2 children of the same name (the first died) there. They then moved back north to Liverpool, where their youngest child, Walter Pugh, was born. He was my great grandfather.

Your post sent me off again on the trail of the Pughs in the earlier censuses. This time I was looking for a likely John Pugh and Mary nee Davies, parents of John 1806 who married Mary Smallman.

1841 census gives John aged 65 with wife Mary 60, living at Basford, Edgton Brunslow St  Horderley. Also there is Margaret Nicholas? aged 13, b.i.c. and Thomas Pugh 35. Both men are ag. labs. (The Smallmans came from Edgton)

Think Thomas is their nephew.

By 1851 Mary is a widow aged 74 a farmers (can't make it out) born Clun. There are 2 gd children Jane Corbet aged 10 and Thomas Corbet 4, both paupers born Hopesay.

Nephew Thomas 50 an unmarried labourer born Lydbury is still with them.  He must be the dead John's brother's son. So who is the father?

Can't find Mary in 1861 so must have died, but Thomas aged 61, a farmer, is now married to Mary 73. Lodging with them is Edward Corbett 70, born Herefordshire.

!871 Thomas is a widower lodging with Richard Hall and Martha Small at Edgton Village.

Can you connect with these? Who would your Richard's parents b? In a 1835 directory I found an entry for Francis Pugh, Horse market and Richard, Castle Green under the trade heading of joiners and carpenters. MY later Pughs were in the timber trade.

PS. Just looked at your first post and you have Richards parents as Richard and Elizabeth. Could he have been a brother to my John?

Also noticed that an Edward Corbett 50 and Elizabeth 25 with children John and Jane and a Harriet Pugh 9, are living next door to John and Mary at Basford in 1841. So logically if Jane and John are John and Marys gd children, as stated in 1851, then their mother Elizabeth is a Pugh. Found a marriage for Elizabeth Pugh and Edward Corbett 30 June 1833 at Bedstone. Now, who is Harriet?

In 1851 Jane and John are down as paupers. could that mean orphans?

I have Pugh families who migrated from this area of Shropshire to Derbyshire, and also had connections with Liverpool. They may very well be linked to your families. Please feel free to check out the database on my web pages.

www.mosleyfamilies.net

If any of these look interesting, let me know, I have much more information than is currently shown on the site. I would also be delighted to establish any new information about the Pugh lines if any of you has anything to contribute.

Cheers

I have quite a number of Pughs' on my tree.  I am connected to the Pugh family through my HUMPHERSON ancestors.  Anne Humpherson married William Rogers.

I quickly looked before posting this I show parents: Thomas Pugh (1803) and Harriet Rogers (1805).  CHILDREN: Sarah (1826);  Mary (1827);  Harried (1830);  Sinah (1831);  Ann (1833);  Eliza(1835)

If you feel there could be a connection to what you are searching, please feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Doris

I hope someone may be able to help. I'm seeking information on the Pugh family of Bishop's Castle (possibly with other districts local to BC)....

Hi,

I am a Pugh who has so far traced my ancestry from Sheffield, South Yorkshire to Clun / Bishop Castle and can confirm a Walter Pugh (b 1767) who Married Mary Hiccins on 09 May 1789 and the Marriage is registered in Bishop Castle, Shropshire.

I believe his father is called Humphrey with mother Elizabeth (Married 01/06/1764 - also Bishop Castle) and has a brother Humphrey (b 1769) I am currently looking into this link and would like to go further but I have no more information at the moment.

I don't know if there is any link helping you between Walter and Humphrey's line or if this is what you are looking for, but I'm sure they will be related one way or another.

If it helps, this is what I have...

To be confirmed
Humphrey Pugh - Elizabeth (Married 01/06/1764 Bishop Castle)
Children: Walter (b 1767 Bishop Castle) [/color]& Humphrey (b 1769 Bishop Castle)

Walter Pugh (b 1767) - Mary Hiccins (Married 09/05/1789 Bishop Castle)

Humphrey Pugh (b 1803) - Anne Jones (Married 28/09/1826 Bishop Castle)
Children: Walter (b 1836 Bishop Castle)

It appears Walter (b 1836) left Bishop Castle and became a steel foundry man who travelled to find work; married, started a family in Birmingham moving to Leeds, Nr Chesterfield, Barnsley and eventually settling in Sheffield.

I hope someone may be able to help. I'm seeking information on the Pugh family of Bishop's Castle (possibly with other districts local to BC).

As far as I can make out, the family were as follows:

Richard & Elizabeth Pugh:
Children:
Richard, 1805/6.
Thomas, 1814.
Sarah 1815 (died in infancy).
Sarah, 1816. Jane 1820.
Most or all of these children were born in Bishop's Castle.

I think the son, Richard, had a wife, Ann, as they lived next door to Thomas' wife in a later census and had the same profession as Thomas (Coachman).

The names of the parents are an educated guess, having found the sister, Sarah, living with thomas' wife... and then running an IGI search (which is how I found all the others bar Richard).

Thomas married Hannah Padmore in 1832 in High Ercall, and they had their children in Bishop's Castle:
John Richard Pugh, 1840
Alice Pugh 1843
Twins Lucy & Margaret Pugh, 1845
Thomas Pugh, 1847/48
James Pugh 1850
Rose Pugh 1854

If anyone can give me some clues about this family prior to 1871, I would be very grateful. I am keen to establish confirmation of some of the relatives, particularly the siblings and parents of Thomas, and any occupations not yet established. Obviously the main area of interest is in the census returns of 1861 & earlier, but anything which might add information would be much appreciated.

Apart from the probable brother, Richard, and his wife, Ann.. I have no details of spouses of Thomas' siblings (Sarah & Jane).

Can anyone help?

Just a snippet of info for you, a Sarah Pugh was present at the death of my gg grandfather, William Humphreys according to his Death Cert. He died aged 40, in October 1865 in Bishops Castle. He was Relieving Officer for the poor in Bishops Castle. I believe at the time he was living in Church Street, Bishops Castle

It's certainly possible, as Sarah Pugh 1816 did not marry and was listed in censuses at least until 1861
