Wild Family History
« on: Tuesday 01 April 08 03:43 BST (UK) »
Hi to all the Wild ones.  I am descended from Abraham Wild (b. about 1790) who arrived in S.Africa with the 1820 Settlers on the ship the "John".  I have a lot of info on his descendents in South Africa, but am trying to establish a link to the U.K. ancestors.  He and his wife Ann Thornton came from Oldham, Lancashire, and were probably from the area of Shaw and Crompton.  He was described in the Ship's records as being a labourer.  Info which I received from the 1820Settlers.com website is that his father was James Wild (b. about 1750) and his mother was Mary Buckley (b. about 1760).  I can find absolutely no marriage records either in the Lancashire Parish records or on IGI.

I have however found a James Wild (b. 1761) and Mary Wild (b. 1765) both of Shaw, Oldham, (could have been cousins I suppose) who had a son Abraham in 1790.

Does anyone out there have any other info for me?  I would be glad to share any info I have.

Regards

Tisy

Hi Tisy,

I have found Three James Wilde  all baptised  Shaw Chapel,
None in 1861

James Wilde  baptised 28-3-1864 son of Abraham & Hester
James Wilde     "        28-5-1864   "    "  Joseph  & Mary
James Wilde     "        29-12-1765  "    "  James  & Jane

Also Mary Buckley Baptised 27-3-1765 Shaw Chapel, Daughter of James Buckley and his wife Sarah,

It would seem that most the Wildes were Methodist as there  are lots of births and Burials, but the Chapel Marriage Records havent been transcribed,

Hope this helps,
Anitamaria

Hi Anitamaria,

Thanks for looking those up for me - it all adds to the bits and pieces which may just fall into place some day!  Just a bit more info on Abraham (1790) who emigrated to S. Africa in 1820;  he and his wife Ann Thornton were married on 19th March 1810 in Manchester - I think at the Cathedral, but if they were methodists as you say (and this is probably right) it may have been at the Methodist Church.  In any event, they had five children in England before they emigrated,  Betty (Elizabeth) Wild b. 16 March 1811 Chris at Holy Trinity, Shaw, Abraham Wild b. 25 December 1812 at Shaw, Oldham, Chris 27 Dec 1812 at Holy Trinity, Shaw, Maria Wild b. 1816  Chris?  Henry Wild b. 13 June 1819 chris ? and Richard Wild born 1811 Chris?

I know its a long shot, but I am hoping someone will have a family legend which recalls that one of their kin emigrated to South Africa in 1820, and we will be able to determine exactly which branch of the Wild's Abraham came from.  It may also be that the marriage record for Abraham and Ann Thornton will contain some reference to their parents - this would be wonderful, and I need to find out how to obtain the actual record.

I am most grateful for your help.

Tisy

My grandma was a Wild  (wild by name, wild by nature, she always said!).

My Wilds are from Darwen (as far as I've been able to trace).  Research on the tree done in the 1920s claims a link to Samuel Crompton (of Spinning Mule fame), but I've not been able to verify that yet.  The link is supposed to be via Dorothy Jepson (1836-1901), who was the daughter of William Jepson (1799-1867) and Martha Crompton (c. 1803-1857).  I've not ploughed through parish registers in Darwen, Bolton and points inbetween yet to see if I can find a connection between Martha Crompton and Samuel Crompton.

My Wild men are usually plasterers, painters and decorators and the eldest is usually called Henry (still holds with the current generation).

The furthest I've got back with Wilds is Henry Wild b. c. 1793, d. 4 Mar 1839 in Darwen who marries Phoebe Grime (b. 18 Jun 1793 Darwen, d. 24 Dec 1852 Darwen) 1 Oct 1810 at Blackburn St Mary's.

At the Lancs Records Office there is a removal order (which Henry appears to have successfully contested) which might suggest Henry came from the Quick/Saddleworth area:
Quote
Henry Wild and Phoebe his wife with Mary aged thirteen years, Henry aged eleven years John aged nine years Samuel aged seven years Charles aged three years and Phoebe aged one year their children from Over Darwen to Saddleworth, West Riding, Yorkshire
This was put off by appeal until February 1827, when, on the same sheet, Saddleworth was crossed out and "Quick" written in in its place.
In February 1827, the order was "set aside", meaning the Wilds were allowed to stay in Darwen.

Many years ago, I came across a book (now forgotten what it was, I'm afraid) which traced Wilds/Wildes/Wyldes/de Wyldes in Lancashire from (I think) the 13th century to the 17th/18th.

I must try to work out what that book was and see if there's any way to bridge the gap to my known Wilds.

Hi Aulus,

If you could just remember what that book was, maybe we could all chuck this in and get a life!

Regards,
