Hi,

Hoping someone may be able to find some information for me on my GGG Grandfather Edward Crickmore, according to the 1841 and 1851 census Edward is listed as a Private serving in the 1st Order Royal Dragoons, have no further information but would love to find out what battles he served in.

Can you say where he was in 1851, or give the census HO ref? There were two regiments he could mean by '1st Order Dragoon'. Either the 1st Dragoon Guards or the 1st Dragoons. If we can establish where he was in 1851 I can look them up in the 1850 Army List, to confirm his regiment

If you search for Crickmore's on the NA website you find two with a East Anglian connection which may be related to your Edward. There is no Edward, so hopefully he was still serving in 1855, as if he had already been discharged it means that his papers have not survived. The two that are in Kew are on microfilm, and I understand they will send you photocopies for 40-50p a page.

You may be disappointed with the wars he was involved in, as not a lot was happening that have involved heavy cavalry. Except the Crimean War of 1853-56, and I don’t believe either regiment were involved in the Charge of the Heavy Brigade - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge_of_the_Heavy_Brigade

Hi Ken,

Thankyou for your help, for the 1841 census Edward is listed at the Newcastle Cavalry Artillery and Infantry Barracks, St Andrews, Newcastle Upon Tyne  (U.K), I can't read the1851 census to well but it is something like 99 High Oakland Barracks, Mansfield, not to sure how long he served for, but he is still listed as a Private in the 1st Royal Dragoons on his sons 1856 birth certifcate, he is then listed at Sheffield in 1861 and at the time of his death in 1870 he is recorded as a Chelsea Pensioner.

Still cannot find him in the 1851 Census. Ancestry does not list anyone with that spelling. If you could post either the HO reference (at the side) or the District number (1a to 1p) from Ancestry that will help.

Either way as you know he was still serving after 1854 you will have to visit Kew to see if his papers survive under 1st Dragoons, rather than 1st Dragoon Guards.

In the 1850 Army List the 1st (Royal) Dragoons were in York, so either they were dispersed or the moved to Notts before teh 1851 Census

The HO number at the side say's 107/2124, hope that's right. You will find him half way down the page with wife Hannah and there children.

No wonder I had a problem, Ancestry have indexed him as Edward Cuclmore.

He was in the 1st (Royal) Regiment of Dragoons, as confirmed by one of the two officers. They were part of just a Troop of a Captain, a Subaltern, 36 men and two civilian grooms, one for each officer, and a handful of wives with children. The wives would have earned a few extra pennies a week by doing the laundry and mending.

The address was just High Oakland Barracks. The ‘99’ is the scheduled number on the census summary.
