Did they wed?
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 20:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I've got Sarah Carr, born 1852/4 In Silkstone, Barnsley.

In 1891 she was a servant to Thomas Heeley who was a widower in Batley, and by the 1901 census she had 'married' him, and was Sarah Heeley.

The only thing is I can't find a marriage for them.  Can anyone help please?

thanks, Jen

Hi Jen,

I've got a couple like that; she went to her grave as "Mrs". A few years ago an elderly relative confirmed that the pair had never married..........I'd spent a long time trying to find a marriage for them!

It must have been common practice in my Carr family, I've just found another one that hasn't a marriage!!

They didn't want to make life easy for us did they?!!!   :(

I can see me spending a full day at the archives trawling through the marriages between the two census on the off chance that I come across them!

I think when its time for us to fill in the next census form, I might make a few things up just to confuse anyone 100+ years from now who is daft enough to do what we are doing now! ;D

Jen - I really like that idea - only 3 years to the next census, gives us some time to change our ages, forget where we were born etc.

Jen

What a excellent idea ;D ;D  ;D

think I've already forgot when I was born

When you say Archives, do you mean Barnsley Library, if so, I must get myself down there, got plenty to look up

3 years - hmm, I think I could make up a new marriage, move to another county, or even country, change the first names of my children, in fact I think they can be male for a change and I might even change occupation as I don't want to be doing the same job as I was at the last census, and I think I may just change my date of birth and lose 6 years, thats an average amount I think.
I finally understand what our rellies did now !! ;D ;D

Yes Jo, it is Barnsley archives  at the library, Ive been and done successful lookups for other people there, but mine are always elusive! :(

I think I have already made it quite difficult. ;D

Everything will be ok up to 1971 but 1981 we were in Co. Mayo then back in UK for 1991 and after that will have disappeared as we haven't filled in anything living here.

One son got married in Las Vegas and has just remarried in Jamaica.
