Marriage
« on: Sunday 04 April 04 07:20 BST (UK) »
hi

Have been told that my great grandmother got married in 1848 in Lamnerton (could it be Lamberton).

Her name was Martha Nicholson (Nicolson) Bainbridge and she married Thomas Sample. According to information i have been given Martha was born around 1830 so would be about 18 at the time of her marriage.

If anyone can confirm this information it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jaki

Hi Jaki

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Hi Ticker

I apologise for not letting you know sooner. A member of the site found the marriage for me in November and i forgot to post a message saying that i now had the information  :-[ . They had an irregular marriage and i started straight away to look for information on these types of marriages and it slipped my mind.

I have slapped my hand for being so slack

Jaki,

It appears that you and I share a common ancestor in Martha Sample (ne Bainbridge) but you're 6 years ahead of me in your family history research.

As you probably know, Martha's son John came to AUS first in 1874 and Martha followed with her other sons and little Martha in 1883.  Then her married daughters Mary and Isabella followed with their families in 1884 and 1886.  I'm descended from Isabella.

Would you be able to help me with the details about Martha's marriage to Thomas?  I'd searched the Scotland BDM and found nothing before I saw your note below about it being an irregular marriage.

Best regards,
Mike

Hi Mike

It has been a while since I have done any research, been on the back burner while life took over.  :)
Had a look in my data file and I have Martha and Thomas marrying on July 4th 1848 in Lamberton Toll. Was sure I had some notes about it too but can't put my hands on them at the moment everything is packed up ready for a move.

Jaki,

Thanks you very much for this info.

I received the other info in your personal email as well but was unable send my "thank you" with a direct reply as, apparently, I'm not authorised to send personal emails.  This is my first day on RootsChat and I'll have to research how I can get authorised.

I'm also researching why Thomas didn't accompany Martha to Aus.  I suspect it was because he had passed away; a Thomas Sample died in Alnwick, Northumberland in 1876 (Q3/10b/220).  The feeble link to this is I believe Isabella was born in Alnwick (ENG/1856/Q4/10b/245).  More research required.   :)

Anyway, thanks again.  And best wishes for the move.

Let me know when you're back on stream and if there's anything I can do to return the favour.

Best regards,
Mike
