Hill and King Families of India
« on: Wednesday 26 March 08 12:36 GMT (UK) »
I am desperately trying to get info on the families of three of my great great grandparents all of whom resided in India.
1)Reginald Benjamin King,  born in Barbados in the late 19th century was, I believe a solicitor and moved to India. He married and had a daughter named Dorothy Maria Elizabeth King (born abt 1892 in Calcutta) who went on to marry R. S. Hepworth Kiernander in1912. I would like to find out more about his wife and the King family in Barbados.

2)My grandmother Enid Josephine Hill was born in Calcutta in 1917. She married Neblett Alfred Kiernander (son of Dorothy and Hepworth) in 1937. Her parents were Edgar Lionel Hill and Josephine Bampton. I would be interested in any info on either of these two families but it is Edgar who fascinates me as I can find absolutely nothing on him. All I know is that he MAY have been a bank clerk.

Any help on these families would be greatly appreciated.

I have since found out that Edgar Hill's parents were Benjamin Cecil Hill who died in 1918 and
Alice Georgiana Dubois who died in 1943. That is all I have on them (they are not giving up their secrets up easily).
Can anyone add to this?

Have a look under The Common Room - Useful Links.  Threads on India are there.  Here is one thread:

If you "Search Rootschat" ticking the board "Useful Links" and searching for India, it will bring up a number of threads!   :D

Hi Scott!  I think we must be related!  I'm a Kiernander; Neblett Alfred Kiernander was my grandfather's brother.  We know a little about Reginald Benjamin King, and have a couple of photographs of his daughter, Dorothy.  I would be happy to email any information.  Aidan

Hi Kiernander and welcome to rootschat :)

Meeting up with a relative first post is quite something - and excellent from Scott's point of view as you have some of the info he seeks.
Great stuff ;D

I have just made a wonderful discovery. Josephine Bampton's mother was also a Kiernander;  a second cousin of Robert Stephen Hepworth.  This was a fact well known apparantly, but totally unrecorded in my copy of the family tree.

Hello Aiden!
I do believe we are related. Was your grandfather Norman Kiernander?
There is a tremendous amount of info on the Kiernanders going back to about 1497 in Sweden. This was put together by members of the Australian branch of our family which I am happy to pass onto you if you do not already have it.
My mother is Dorothy Kiernander and sadly she does not have much on her family. Apparently her grandmother Josephine Bampton (who I met many years ago) did not like to take or keep photos. And yes, she was a Kiernander as well which plays havoc when trying to draw out the family tree.
She was one of three sisters who married three brothers of the Hill Family.
I would love any info you have on the King Family. Did they originate from Barbados? Do you know anything about Dorothy King's mother ?
I eagerly look forward to your reply?
Scott

Hi Scott,
My name is Blair Kiernander and the son of Melville and Selma.Dorothy and Hepworth were my grandparents. My dad was the eldest child and there was a host of siblings named Neblett,Norman,George,Joyce and Ashley.Sadly all are dead.
I remember both grandparents very well,Hepworth died in the 1950's in India and Dorothy passed away in the 60's I believe.
Hope this helps.Do not hesitate to contact me if you require any other information as my older sister is something of a sage on family history.....Best wishes.....Blair

Hello Scott

I saw your message on this site.  It is very interesting to read your family history and see in writing  what Josephine and Dorothy had been told.  I knew your family when they first moved to Montréal - Ken (as your grandfather was known); Enid, Josephine, Dorothy, Sally and Stephen - and attended high school with Jo and Do.  Could you please ask them to contactme?  I haven't heard from them for three years.  I am still at the same address in British Columbia.  Thank you so much!
