Deirdre,
Cando forwarded some information that you had sent to her, so think I have it thanks.

re Emanuel UnderWOOD in W A.....there are a couple of possibilities.....he may have genuinely been an Underwood.....or again there may have been that name change. There is also a possibility it could hhave been Henry Emanuel Underdown going by the name Emanuel. It's probably one of those things we'll never know....

I have been Googling madly with Underdown and Underwood and on the Archive web site in what they have on line but nothing is coming up to show just when and why Robert JC changed from down to wood either.

In that email it mentions scribes and literacy and navy so one would think they could all read and write so any errors must be transcription ones which the change of name would be deliberate.  I thought of that in my sleep would you believe .. I am dreaming about this now... ::)

Through your Googling, have you come across the following website ?

http://brady.myphotos.cc/genealogy/surnames-oneletter.php?firstchar=U

This looks like it is the Henry Emanuel we have been tracking, son of Robert and Elizabeth......but I can't work out where it links into the Brady tree.....

When you visit the home page, you have to register to get more information.....  :-\

I'd be wary of registering for the afore-mentioned site, because I have now found an obviously linked page that looks perfect for the harvesting of email addresses.......  :o  :o  :o  ::)  ::)

Yes found that during my searches and thought...oh dear. Didn't spend much time on it - just went to WA BDM's.

I actually emailed the author of the site and notified him of the incorrect date of birth of Henry Emanuel.  The son is buried in Karrakatta....

Reply  can't recall

Just found this though....looks much more interesting.....

http://home.vicnet.net.au/~mgfhs/dawnuvw.htm

I visited the home page so looks reliable.

Joshua George Underdown's death certificate (1861) is listed......

A very cheap transcription available, Deirdre! I'd go for that!
