once again a  mix up  with the  surname  But a  tie  in  with the HERD

oooh Jenn....I'm working on a summary....but that adds more speculation.....did Robert and Elizabeth actually marry....or was she telling porkies to her family to have a marriage recorded in California? And what happened to the husband William?

I was very suspicious of the married in California.....yes she probably was in California Gully nr Bendigo.  I remember reading it as a place of birth for one of my mother's ancestors and they lived all their lives in Bendigo.  Do a google and you will see it is part of Bendigo now.

My two bob's worth....before I read your summary

I thought the following from the passenger list is worth noting

McBROWN Elizabeth 20 Armagh, Ire. (on Purser's list, but not in SA REGISTER)

It would interesting to see the birth cert of Hannah/Anna Elizabeth.  Who was William HEARD/HERD - a seaman or miner in transit to Victorian goldfields perhaps and therefore he wouldn't show in SA death records.

Also the death certificate of Robert NUDERDOWN/UNDERDOWN may reveal a little more of the story ie how long in SA, where married etc. 

Wonder if the confusion has arisen because of illiteracy and accents.

I can probably see that birth certificate at some stage, Cando....but it could be some time away before I am at the SAGHS Library. I'll add it to my list though.....

I had similar thoughts about Robert's death cert..... 

I have also wondered about illiteracy and misunderstanding re the name....and Underdown in Queensland...if whoever was recording heard the "Under" part and presumed it was the far more common Underwood......

yes Dee do  post it  I  am  sure  it  will  be  a  fun  summary  not a  lecture

I  also  find  it a  bit  hard  to  believe the  marriage  in California USA  more  like  California Gully.

I wonder  what  the  birth  of  one of  the children  might say as  to  place of marriage, or even Robert's death.

Another odd thing  is  I  cannot find  her Elizabeth Ann Underdown on  the  Electoral  Rolls?
  When  you  do  search for underdown   the  interesting  thing   is  you will  get  Underwood  after  the results for Underdown.

My own  personal feeling  is  it  is  the  right family though  just a  change of  name
