A Henry Underdown married in 1904 in WA
No parents’ names are given though.

BUT

Looks like it was the missing Henry Emanuel Underdown….
Henry Emanuel Charles  UNDERDOWN born in 1905 to  Henry UNDERDOWN and  Alice Ada  BYFIELD  at MAHOGANY
Ref = 6886

It's obvious that the first Robert James Underdown would have died in early childhood when the parents named another child Robert James ...so that just leaves Robert James Charles/Alexander Underdown to trace.....

Deidre....what were the names of all of the children of Robert JC Underwood and Bridelia?

Will they provide any clues?

It would be lovely if they named  one of their children using the name Emanuel!  ;D  ;D

There are absolutely no entries at all for Underwood up to 1888 for Bendigo or Sandhurst. Not sure about other places that might be nearby.......Raylen would have more idea than me.

OK - we need a tea or coffee break and seeing I can't take you out to the local coffee shop I have spent the money and purchased Elizabeth Ann's death cert in 1916.

Elizabeth was born in Amagh, Ireland and married in California, AMERICA at the age of 24 to Robert UNDERDOWN.
63 years in State of Victoria.

Children                       Ages in 1916
Hannah Elizabeth        62 years
Robert James Charles Washington    Deceased
Thomas David               Deceased
May Elizabeth Ann        55 years
Joshua George             Deceased
Sarah Jane                   53 years
Robert James Charles Alexander  53 years
William Joshua George   45 years

And it's bed time for me.

Life in Australia:

Emanuel Underdown was married to Mary Squire by Reverend Edward Holwell at Plymtree church Devon, on 31 March 1826. In the records held at the State library, Emanuel was listed as an agricultural labourer who applied on 23/2/1838 for free passage to settle in SA . His children were John Squire10, Maria Angola 8 and Lycurgus 4 at that time. His address in UK was given as Arundel, Sussex. I have not been able to work out what he was doing there. Certainly, by 1838, this line of Underdowns did not hold the Devon farmland they once held. I suspect that the large size of all the Underdown families meant that the younger sons had to go off and make their own way in life. Emanuel and his family sailed to Australia in the ship "Lloyds", a 406 ton barque. They arrived in Adelaide on 1 December 1838.

Emanuel & Mary settled at Salisbury in South Australia. It is thought that Emanuel was a farm labourer at Reed Beds near Adelaide before settling his own land. Mary had 500 pounds from her family which may have made it possible to purchase land. Emanuel called his property “Widworthy” after the town where he was born in Devon. When he died in April 1863, he was buried on his own land, and when his wife Mary died in July 1870, his remains were disinterred and placed beside her in the burial ground at St. John’s Salisbury SA, Church of England. The elder son John Squire Underdown continued to farm and enlarge the family holdings in South Australia. In the next generation. Robert Emanuel Underdown, the grandson of pioneer Emanuel, lost the lands and died a poor man

I  realsie  this  is  not  the same  family  but  do  wonder  if  no  doubt related, hence  the emmanuel
