Book is `Parish of Stanway 1700-1840 - People & Places` ISBN 0-9541896-0-4
John Batterham (Baker) - wife named Sarah. William Stevens Batterham son of John & Sarah baptised 1832. Then another son, William Batterham baptised December 14th 1833. (St Albrights Church, Stanway) Family on the 1841 census, Stanway. Sarah was a widow by 1851. Name sometimes occcurrs as Battram.

Forgot to say in my personel message that John Ling was the owner of a Beer house in Beacon End. I presume this was the Live and Let Live. It was occupied by William Miller from at least 1861 to 1884 when the last poor rate book is dated to. The cottages owned by John Ling were owned by a Tracy in 1861.

this is the first time I have used this site,  I was very excited to read the posting about Thomas Bewers in Copford as I believe he is an ancestor. he branch of the bewers family I have been researching lived in the Hannifields and Sandon.  A John and Martha Bewers farmed in Sandon for most of the 1800's. I am descended from this branch. If you have or want any more informatioin about this branch of the Bewers Please let me Know.  If any more is known about the John Bewers mentioned above who was in the Royal Artillery I would be very  interested  Annette

I had forgotten this thread, it came as it of a surprise to me when it popped up.

I have found more information on John Stevens who I thought was Henry's brother, I am convinced now that they were brothers.

I have things going on at the moment, but I will be back in touch soon.

Hello - not sure if you are all still active on here 4 years after the last post in the thread, but I came across it while following some leads of my own regarding the Stevens family in London, which lead to Copford.

I have gotten back as far as a family in Marylebone, London, in the 1851 census:

Charles Stephens (Waiter) born Abt 1805, COPFORD.
Ann Stevens (wife) born Abt 1804, Mildenhall Suffolk
Charles Stephens (son, Apprentice something?) born Abt 1833, Middlesex
Louisa Stephens (dau) born Abt 1834, Middlesex
Thomas (son, Apprentice Chair & Sofa Maker) born Abt 1836 Middlesex
Ann (dau) born Abt1840 Middlesex
Jane? (dau) born Abt1842 Middlesex

I have my family tree on the ancestry website, and from other people's trees the most likely candidate for Charles Stephens (spelled Stevens everywhere apart from the 1851 census) is the Charles Stevens who is brother to:
Mary (1788-)
William (1791-1845)
Sarah (1794-)
John (1797-)
Henry (1800-1845)
Thomas (1802-)
Edward (1807-1883)
Charles (1805-)
 - all born Copford.

Their parents are given as:
William Stevens (1760-)
Mary Moss (1764-)

I would love to hear what any of you know about this family, and will be happy to share what else I know. (I am a Stevens myself)
