Luke Howard portrait?... or not?
« on: Monday 24 March 08 20:15 GMT (UK) »
I found a portrait by Joseph Jewell (distant relative) at the Science
museum, (hope this works!)

www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/results.asp?image=10320296&wwwflag=2&imagepos=10

They think it is of Luke Howard, the man who invented the classification of clouds, as it was "aquired with an archive" relating to him. (at the N.A)

Anyway, after ordering a copy I can see (in the top left corner) it say says "Joseph Jewell Æt 70" which means "at" doesn't it?

I'm hoping it is a self portrait of Joseph, even though he looks rather scary!!!, but if it is, then why did Luke Howard have it??  I know that they were business associates when they were younger and probably went to the same Quaker meetings etc.  I've seen a couple of pictures of Luke when he was younger but can't decide if it's him

any ideas?

Yes that's him. there are a couple of others as well, but I can't find one of when he's older, for comparison.
I would love to see that memoir of Joseph Jewell.
I have to say that the painting gives me goosebumps. It really brings people alive when you see a picture rather than just a name on the tree. I'm sure I can see a family likeness, but that might be wishful thinking!!
