I found a JOhn RYLAH, widower, in 1851, born Earlsheaton living Soothill.  About the right age - could he be the father of Dixon and George, who are visiting with George and Anne in 1851?

The lack of name probably means simply that they hadn't decided what to call him, nothing more sinister. It isn't especially common but certainly not an abnormal thing to do.
